Riots, looting, vandalism, etc.

OT: I used to think I was a solid and loyal Democrat in alignment with the party but I don’t know anymore. Biden is the nominee and he’s not a left-wing maniac, which I guess reflects the moderate character of our party’s voters; but the platform is in some ways too left for me.

Specifically what?

More generally, there are a lot of avenues for Woke ******* to assert itself that are being exploited in the party I don’t agree with, like with the so-called Equality Act and its handling of GI. (Don’t get me wrong, I’ll never vote for the Republicans as I disagree with them fundamentally on core issues, and, you know, their full-on embracing of crazy and partial embrace of fascism is off putting.)

According to this...

The Equality Act is a bill in the United States Congress, that, if passed, would amend the Civil Rights Act to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, public accommodations, public education, federal funding, credit, and the jury system

What on Earth is so radical and unbelievable about that?

Why should there be discrimination on the basis of gender or sexual orientation? I don't get what is so "crazy" about it.

It just feels like I’m out of step now. To be more precise it feels like the distribution of values is shifting away from moderate liberalism towards this strange amalgam of radical academic leftism and a grotesque Marxism that is ethnocentric instead of class centered. It’s alienating.

From what I remember, Bernie Sanders did not get the nomination. There was quite a lot of talk about it and how Biden would be the "big tent" candidate. And at the same time, the mainstream parties have funded candidates to run in primaries against the more left wing candidates. I don't think the Democrats are at risk of becoming "radical", unless you mean a higher minimum wage or trying to get universal healthcare which, to me, seems very much class-orientated. Shouldn't you be pleased that the Democrats are picking up more left wing economic ideas?

As for why are they (some not all Democrats) allowing this madness? I have no idea. Maybe they agree with the rioters, or maybe they’re scared acting against them will escalate things and that this will fizzle out with inaction (which is a gross abdication of responsibility imo)? Who knows. I’d like to see some kind of sensible approach to restoring order in places where chaos reigns, but I don’t think that’s going to happen so I won’t hold my breathe.

I don't think Biden and co are supporting the rioters.

I'm not 100 percent on your side as you seem to advocate proactive self-defense. On video I saw it seems plausible that Reinoehl was targeting Danielson to get even for something earlier, not defending himself/his friend. But witnesses say that Danielson had just used bear spray? And that baton, and that pistol. He wasn't looking for a card game. I can imagine a scenario in which Reinoehl could beat that charge.

I can also picture him standing on the sidewalk by his car with his hands in the air while holding a pistol, prepared to drop it. See, here's my gun, here's my hands, I'll go peacefully. Of course I can't say it happened that way. Maybe he leveled it at marshals and they went all Bonnie & Clyde on him.

I was referencing the more recent protest, in which Proud Boys rushed crowds of unarmed, peaceful protesters and beat them while they fled. One was struck in the head with a metal bat and pepper sprayed while laying on the ground defenseless. No arrests for that aggravated assault. This is an unambiguous case where lethal self defense would have been appropriate. Two men were later arrested for a separate, less severe attack, and one man appears to have been involved in both attacks. The man swinging a metal bat at heads was never apprehended despite making no efforts to flee the scene.

The Danielson shooting is a different matter where a self-defense claim was plausible, but by no means a sure thing. It's a moot point now that all involved parties are dead.

My point with that shooting is that decent people should not be swayed by the crocodile tears of the right. The same people mourning the loss of the "peaceful" Danielson are the ones that were gleefully beating and spraying the crowds mere hours before the shooting and are publicly praising the Proud Boys that beat unarmed BLM protesters in Salem after. These people want violence, and it's an unqualified positive outcome when they are the ones suffering violence instead of their intended victims.

The fascists attempt to take advantage of the better natures of the general public that is rightly averse to violence. Don't be a sucker, these people are the enemy. Fighting them is dirty work in which decent people take no pleasure, but it is entirely necessary.

In another thread I saw many pictures of heavily armed black militia members and my visceral reaction was unexpected. I thought ... well, good. Don't let white shows of force go unanswered; come prepared. And well-trained. And well-disciplined. But at the same time - that's insane. I disagree with your general position as I understand it; I wish everyone would just stay home. No fires, riots, looting, shootings, baseball bats, pepper spray, teargas, bear spray; no flex batons, paintballs or semi-auto rifles and no handguns please. No shoving, tripping, less-lethal projectiles or teargas. No going after a guy that maybe went after your guy earlier. No Tube-style sucker punches, no bags of soup, no back-and-forth taunts.

I have never been violent. I've heard it can be cathartic. That scares me. I think it probably helps Trump. But seeing heavily armed black men doesn't bother me any more than seeing heavily armed white men. I begin to see your point of view.

Keep in mind this is necessary because the police refuse to enforce the law against fascists and other right wingers intending to do violence. The Charlottesville model, where the cops do nothing while right wingers use violence to dominate public spaces, is played out over and over and over again. The best we can hope for from the police is maybe a few arrests after the fact when public outrage at their inaction becomes too overwhelming. This is in stunning contrast to their treatment of BLM "riots", in which minor infractions of public order are met with beatings, tear gassing, and arrest.

The rise of opposing armed factions is a direct result of the general understanding that the right wing has free reign to use violence. The police have abdicated their position as the sole legitimate source of violence. Those that are alarmed by the growing amount of political violence should look first to the police who are choosing to create this environment through their preferential treatment of fascists.

The best thing that could happen would be for the police to arrest all these Proud Boys and other fascists that are known violent actors, including many who have been repeatedly filmed committing unlawful assaults with various weapons. The police, through their targeted non-enforcement of the law, are endorsing the current dangerous climate.

ETA: All that said, the large black militia seen at these events, NFAC, has a very troubling record. The leader seems to be a vile anti-semite, and they wounded some of their own people at a prior event with a negligent discharge. Some of the pics and videos lead me to believe that an alarming portion of their group do not seem competent in handling the weapons they carry and are probably more of a danger to themselves and others than they are a helpful element. There's good reason to not like this militia, even if you aren't opposed to all-black self-defense militias generally.

I think you need to work on your reading comprehension.

There may very well be video, collected at the scene. It's difficult getting routine information out of the feds. I could always find a inmate in county or state lockup in a matter of seconds. I tried to do that with a DOJ case and they wanted a credit card number. I feel a little guilty for not following through. I doubt if it's gotten any better. But someone will FOIA these records and it will come out. If it were an execution, they should have used better tactics than firing up to 50 rounds on a residential street. If it comes out that he was shooting at officers, fine, take him out. But if the feds could have said anything stronger than he "produced" a weapon, they probably would have. Did he aim it? Did he fire it?

The tea leaves suggest that they were clumsy in how they started the confrontation, some officer either panicked or otherwise decided to start shooting because he saw a gun or wanted to kill antifa, then everyone empties the clip and here we are.

If they can construct a story that the guy either fired or pointed a weapon without contradicting physical evidence then that is where they will go with this. If not, then it can be sticky for them..

How much of this was so foreseeable that it might have well been intentional is the big question that would only be answered by a strong independent investigation that will never happen.

Fixed link. Now here we are in 100% agreement. The people shown attacking the guy in that video should be arrested, prosecuted, and incarcerated. It was a disgusting and cowardly criminal attack by low-life thugs. I do note that there is another video a couple posts down of another attack where the cops arrested the Proud Boy involved, so perhaps here the cops were not witnesses. I am sure they are aware of the attack by now and are working on identifying the culprits. The wheels of justice may grind slowly, but they grind inexorably.

As far as I can tell, the man with the bat has not been arrested. The second man was charged only with the second, lesser attack. Online antifascists have identified the woman seen macing the downed man, who also maced a naked protester earlier in the rally. Apparently she is dating Alan Swinney, the heavily armed Proud Boy seen committing multiple assaults at prior events.

There are no arrests or charges related to the bat attack as of right now. Given that previous assaults and other crimes by Proud Boys have not been pursued by the police, I have very little hope that this will be seen as high priority.

Circumstances matter. We don't turn in our consciences in exchange for a license to do journalism.

Your child drowning example doesn't actually contradict me. The journalist gave up covering the flood in order to rescue a child. This is right and proper: the child's life is more important than him getting coverage. So the journalist made the right choice. But it doesn't change the fact that he couldn't do both.

You either go to a protest to protest, or you go to a protest to cover it as a journalist. You can't do both. I won't fault a journalist for choosing to be a protester instead, as long as he doesn't pretend to still be a journalist while he's protesting.

So just to sum up the "OMG DEY R RIOTING!" side.

- "I was going to entertain the possibility of black people being treated like humans until I saw a building on fire."

- "I understand why protests shouldn't turn into riots but can't grasp why arrests shouldn't turn into murders."

A gender reveal explosive has done more property damage than all the BLM riots put together. What a strange world we live in.

Twice, no less.

Honestly the "OMG Dey have turned Portland into a war zone!?" theatrics are laughable. More damage gets done whenever a team wins a playoff game in most cities.

Exactly. The conservative overreaction to the protests is hilarious.

A few blocks of a few cities have some damage and they act like it's a revolution or something. I wish that was the case, but it's not. And I guarantee a lot of these protests would be a lot more peaceful if they didn't have cops (and now cop-supported vigilantes) antagonizing them frequently.

I've been through a number of protests and they remain peaceful as long as the cops keep their distance and respect our right to protest. When they don't, that's when the antagonism starts.

There's an element in here that I think goes overlooked.

Police should stop shooting unarmed black men.

Rioters should stop damaging property that belongs to NOT-POLICE.

The people causing property damage aren't acting against the police, they're acting against innocent bystanders for no good reason at all. If this were a way, we'd have one side being absolute ******** and murdering all of their enemies and not taking any prisoners or showing any mercy (this would be the police). The other side, however, is attacking schoolchildren and civilians.

Fight against oppressors - Yes!!! DO NOT loot your allies and burn down the businesses of innocent people who aren't the ones shooting at you!

Sigh...

You just missed and simultaneously demonstrated my point

Okay let me know where I lose people.

- If the cops stop murdering black people in the streets, the rioters will stop rioting.

- If the rioters stop rioting, the police will continue to murder black people in the streets.

One of these things is a reaction to the other. It's not a difficult concept.

How about things stay the same, but people stop complaining. That's what we really want

Objectively true, depending on viewpoint.

Well regardless of how much me and you butt heads on things, we're both capable of enough human empathy to have viewpoints beyond our own immediate comfort and self interests.

A world were one group of people is murdered in the street isn't "nicer" even if it never directly effects me.

How about... If the cops stop murdering black people AND the rioters stop rioting then maybe we can actually get some changes made?

Gender reveal parties have destroyed tens of thousands more square miles of property then BLM and Antifa combined.

Hey, thanks for putting things in perspective. a 12 years old boy was just found deceased from the fires in Lyons Oregon from the fires and the property damage is immense. There are sure to be far mor lives lost. These riots are nearly irrelevant. Why are we all getting so worked up clutching our pearls about the arsons and murders on our streets or when the real police shoot an innocent and harmless person or when the CHOP zone "sentinels" pseudo police kill unarmed black people as well? Fires a far worse to life and limb.
