Ricky Tomlinson and the Shrewsbury 24

I'd forgotten about this case until Ricky Tomlinson was on the radio today talking about his campaign to have his and the rest of the Shrewsbury 24s' convictions overturned.

For the uninitiated, the Shrewsbury 24 were flying pickets that were jailed for allegedly committing all manner of crimes, including affray and unlawful assembly.

It's disturbing that the government won't release the relevant papers, citing some spurious security concerns. Mind, I can imagine what the papers will show, after what we've seen from the stuff released in the last few years (e.g. Hillsborough, Thatcher wanting to let Liverpool rot etc).

I interviewed Ricky Tomlinson a few years ago for a magazine article about his childhood growing up in a council house. He's a good man, and a proper old school passionate unionist. Wish there were more like him these days.

Old school passionate unionist, let us see. He is against us fighting Isis, which we have just signed up for.

Leaving ISIS out of it, I think the case shows the chief function of the police in the capitalist state, which is to repress the working class. The police broke many laws in the course of breaking the miners' strike just as they did, for different reasons, in suppressing their role in the Hillsborough disaster.

Well the Tories at that time were basically using the police as a private army. It's no wonder they aren't keen to release those documents.

Re: The National Front. Yeah and I used to think I was a Conservative. Then I learned some stuff. Tomlinson says the same thing - it's not like he's a closet skinhead.
