Rick Santorum is an idiot, a bigot, and morally inconsistent...

Well... you did suggest Savage was a "petty jerk"...

Looking at my post, it does look like that's what I said, but what I'm trying to say is that simply handwaving Santorum's idiocy with a poop joke (as thousands of people do nowadays) makes the handwaver appear to be a petty jerk to someone not familiar with the context/history of the joke.

... but, fair enough. However, your beef seems to be with the general state of political discourse rather than this specific issue.

Personally, I think what Savage did was hilarious, even if legions of tone-deaf "comedians" have appropriated the joke and driven it into the ground.

Savage's idea was indeed creative and funny. Unfortunately, it's the creativity-free hangers-on that ruin things. See, for example, how fast cake jokes got old after Portal was released.

I have discussed Santorum several times IRL with different groups of conservative, moderate, and even some liberal folks. Only once did the whole alternate definition come up -- long enough for everyone to shake their heads in disgust and praise Rick for being willing to uphold his beliefs against really nasty attackers. Never once has it led to any sort of joke, subtle or otherwise.

But maybe I just travel in the wrong circles.
In an interview, Mr. S compared gay sex to bestiality. In the years since he has continued to condemn homosexuals and worked to deny their various points honest consideration.

Your "circles" may shake heads and feel disgust at poor Mr. S being called a name, but their righteous indignation is misplaced, if not wholly ignorant.

Again, fair enough. I believe we have reached an accord.

Every good joke will eventually be ruined by unfunny people. And it seems the internet has only expedited the process.

It seems to me that their righteous indignation is right where it should be.

And if this is what you want them to consider, then this is what you should be talking about. Which is ALB's whole point -- the unnecessary and inappropriate behavior detracts from your message.

The ego is a marvelous thing, isn't it?

You and your "circles" may tut-tut all you like, you may even sniffle and pat Mr. S on the back with a heartfelt, sympathetic tenderness. The poor dear, being subjected to name-calling!

His actions have been, and continue to be, contemptible. That is what you should be talking about.

Because it's mean spirited and disgusting.
So is denying a person the same liberties as the rest of society enjoys.

ETA:
For the record, I also think the santorum name calling thing is childish. Just because someone harbors disgusting childish views (e.g., denying people to marry), doesn't mean we should treat them with the same level of discourse.

I actually agree with A Laughing Baby on this.

I think the joke is fine with those that you know agree with you that he is a disgusting, hate filled man. But in a discussion of his policies in general it might be out of place.

I should note that the last instance of santorum being brought up in regards to Santorum, it was to correct someone's incorrect assessment of what Santorum means. In that case it's perfectly reasonable to bring it up.

Otherwise I mostly agree with A Laughing Baby's main point.

oooo, what if he becomes president?

Now that my patriotism has long faded away, I only have morbid curiosity.

If homophobic bigots who want to take away women's rights and make American law comport with "god's law" is good then yeah, you are right.

Dude, compared to what?

To a 30% increase in spending in two years?

I'll risk it.

I voted for Obama because I hated McCain's free speech regulatory zeal. I'm sorry I did.

Don't be sorry for hating McCain's free speech regulatory zeal.

I'll vote against Obama unless the candidate is Gingrich -- in which case I'll just stay home.
