Saddam Hussein's reign of terror is about to end. He will go quickly, but not alone: in a parting irony, he will take the UN down with him. Well, not the whole UN. The "good works" part will survive, the low-risk peacekeeping bureaucracies will remain, the chatterbox on the Hudson will continue to bleat. What will die is the fantasy of the UN as the foundation of a new world order. As we sift the debris, it will be important to preserve, the better to understand, the intellectual wreckage of the liberal conceit of safety through international law administered by international institutions.

How's the conceit going these days, Richard?

Does he mean the same UN whose resolutions and the violations thereof were the justification of launching a war against Iraq?

Looks like Mr. Pearle wants it both ways.

I like it and I agree.

Perhaps in the distant future there will be an international order that will protect human rights and ensure world order. Until then we have the UN. It is quite demonstrable that it is nearly impossible to enforce any rule of law on Nations like North Korea, Cuba, the Sudan, Saudi Arabia, etc. all the while these Nations thumb their noses.

Has the UN had any measurable effect in the lives of children being sold into slavery this very day? Has it had any measurable effect in the lives of Muslim women who are nothing more than property in their respective countries? The UN stood by while Iraqi oil for food money was being distributed to UN members.

Hold on there you say, America does not play fair either. America does not abide by all of the rules. True, that is fine with me. We are a democracy though and I trust that far more than a group of individuals of whom many do not respect democracy or even human rights.

Thanks for the article AUP. I mean that with all sincerity.
