repairing scratched cd?

My testimonial:

A few years ago, we tested one of those home polishers (one with the hand crank). We took a product cd, put it on the floor, stood on it, then “skated” around the room on it. After a good polishing it still worked!

Did it not work before you polished it???;)

That is a good question I myself was wondering about. Did you guys confirm it didn't work beforehand?

I've restored some damaged audio CD's using watch crystal polishing compound on a loose muslin buff mounted on a spindle polisher (not the most common item you'd find lying around the house). It worked well, just a matter of polishing radially (center to edge) rather than circumferentially. Took less than 30 seconds and took out a deep gouge that one of the hand grinders couldn't handle.

I have in my experience with it. I've been able to use it to revive at least four disks (one of them twice). These disks would not install on the computer (copy errors, installation would fail), even after multiple cleanings. I was able to get them working after polishing them (I use the electric version of the polisher, though). I've had two that it failed on. Still, a 67% success rate isn't bad :).

IF it's the thick (reading) side of the CD that's scratched, you should be able to work out the scratch as long as it's not too deep.

If the data side (the side with the label) is scratched, it's dead. The information is gone.

The advice here is at least mostly good. Get a kit from a computer store is my vote.
