Rep. Jim Jordan Accused of Turning a Blind Eye to Sexual Abuse

I saw on CNN that Jordan thinks the timing of this, with his pressing the DoJ on releasing Russia is suspicious. No, it's not suspicious, it's obvious. Yes, the Democrats likely went digging after his little blow up with the Deputy AG and found the skeleton in his closet. PROTIP: If you tolerated the sexual abuse of young men you coached while wrestling, maybe don't run for Congress.

The allegations came out months ago, as did the OSU investigation. They're getting traction now for that reason but they're not new.

A half-dozen ex-wrestlers told POLITICO they were regularly harassed in their training facility by sexually aggressive men who attended the university or worked there. The voyeurs would masturbate while watching the wrestlers shower or sit in the sauna, or engage in sexual acts in the areas where the athletes trained, the former wrestlers said.

Larkins Hall, the building that housed athletic teams, became such a well-known target that people who frequented it at the time have reminisced in anonymous postings online how easy it was to ogle naked members of the wrestling team.

The situation was so egregious that former wrestling head coach Russ Hellickson would at times have to physically drag the gawkers out of the building, several sources familiar with his actions at the time said. Hellickson also pleaded with the university multiple times to move their athletes to a private facility, the sources said. Jordan served as Hellickson’s No. 2, and the coach has been described as Jordan’s mentor.

I guess one way that Jordan might actually be honest about not seeing or hearing about any sexual abuse is if this wouldn't be considered sexually abusive because stuff like this is tolerated in the world of wrestling.

I mean you have to at least a little bit gay to endure jocks and getting balls to the face, right?

That's a bit of a cheap shot. There were some pretty clear divides in the Republican Party regarding Moore. Certainly not every Republican supported Moore.

The RNC and Trump (leader of the party) both endorsed Moore. Someone who identifies as Republican is going to be tarred with that brush, and rightly so. If they don't like it, they can leave the party.

These are Ohio State University wrestlers? Weren't they adults when this allegedly occurred? When I was 18 no one touched me unless I wanted to be touched. And yes it's still that way. Why didn't these very fit WRESTLERS not allow the doctor to touch them? If higher ups weren't doing anything, the young men could easily have stopped the Dr. and backed each other up. What am I missing, seriously?

It wasn’t just the doctor doing excessive touching and groping.

There was “a group of athletes who were complaining on a regular basis, not only about Strauss but the conditions within the hall that forced us to take showers with not only Strauss but other university faculty members and professors who had access to our shower facility that led to lewd acts, masturbation, excessive soaping of the groin area,” DiSabato said.

Maybe what you're missing is that not everyone reacts in the same way to sexual abuse. Being physically fit doesn't mean you're emotionally strong.

The moral of this story is go to the police. Go to people charged with and empowered to investigate sex crimes. Don't go to coaches. Don't go athletic directors, pastors, the troop leader, that leads to Ohio State, the Boy Scouts and the pretty much the entire Catholic Church. If you go to people not specifically trained and authorized to investigate crimes someone is going to "protect the institution". No, they aren't. They are going to make it worse and when the truth comes out the story is going to have legs.

Doctor tries to give a handjob to kid, kid calls police, bad press for a couple of days. Doctor tries to give handjob, kid goes to administrator, administrator tries to handle it internally, years from now, an intrepid reporter finds the first kid hi-jinks ensue. If Jordan had picked up the phone and dialed 911 the first time a kid reported inappropriate touching, he'd be Teflon on this.

How utterly irrelevant that is to the matter.

It's very easy to sit back and tell victims of sexual abuse/assault what they should have done but talk to any victim and they'll tell you it isn't that easy. It's traumatic and I can only imagine how an 18 year old kid is going to feel when his doctor was grabbing his genitals and his professor was showering with him and touching himself. There is going a lot of stigmas attached, a lot of peer pressure, and a desire to keep it secret to avoid the perceived shame.
