Time somebody asked this. Does the cat's consciousness (or cessation of consciousness) not count? Isn't he allowed to realise he's alive, if that's how it goes?
Consciousness has nothing to do with it, I believe. If you were in the box, you could be in a superposition of states but you wouldn't know about it, because your states would have no way of perceiving the other states. The whole universe might be in a superposition, but only when viewed from "outside". Open the box and it becomes part of "outside" and the superpositions collapse.
This is all just my opinion based on what is probably an exceedingly simplified grasp of quantum mechanics.
