This, I think, is the silver lining in the fact that Republicans appear to be the dominant party for the foreseeable future. If they have broader popular support, they don't need to woo their extremist supporters quite so much. This opens the door to more and more moderates slipping into office. In twenty years' time, the Christian right might find themselves being shown the door.
