Find a tool you like writing with and then you can switch formats using the free Calibre library management tool? It can convert Word etc docs to epub and mobi etc.

I just use word when I convert paperbacks to Kindle but I do so as none of the existing software handle images and the 19th century formatting I use. I use Word also because I'm very familiar with it. If you run into trouble you convert to HTML.
