You know, believe it or not I got a lot out of a textbook, The Molecular Biology of the Gene by James Watson. I found it pretty well written, much less dry than a lot of textbooks. And it's the straight stuff from the man who discovered it, usually not a bad recommendation. OTOH, I have to admit it's not about genetics, but about precisely what the title says: molecular biology. For pure genetics, I'd say The Selfish Gene is about as good as it gets.
