Reagan: 'Tear Down This Wall'; Joe Miller: 'Build Up This Wall'

Reagan would probably say something like "it's about time we follow through with the enforcement half of the amnesty agreement we enacted almost thirty years ago."

We should build a big ghetto to place all mexican immigrants into, because they took 'er jobs!

The Berlin Wall was obviously a poor choice for comparison. A better one would have been Israels walls built to keep out suicide bombers, walls which have been very effective.

You think he'd recommend we should emulate East Germany?
"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" was a call to unite the FRG with the DDR, yes?

Or do you just think Reagan was against border control? Or hated walls? What was your point with the Reagan thing?

The argument appears to be that walls are inherently bad regardless of purpose, so comparing Regan tearing down a wall to Miller proposing to build one shows that Miller is out-of-touch with the generally anti-wall platform of mainstream republicans, most of whom live in tents as they have had difficulty figuring out how to keep their roofs elevated.

Smart-aleck.

No, the point is that both Reagan and Miller were talking about the same wall. The wall that Reagan said should be torn down is the wall that Joe Miller said we should look to as a model when we build a wall on our border. Do you see the irony? ;)

I don't... because I think Reagan would agree that the wall was certainly effective at keeping people in East Berlin from crossing to West Berlin. Joe Miller wasn't saying he thought Germany shouldn't have been reunited, was he?

Sorry Pup, the analogy just doesn't work for me. :boxedin:

No, not even remotely true.

Miller is talking about a wall along the US/Mexico border. One that is needed more and more every day. Berlin is on the opposite side of the planet. Rebuilding their wall will have no impact on US border security.

You're dishonestly misrepresenting Millers remarks to make it sound as though he approves of the actions of a communist dictatorship.

Joe Miller On Securing The Border: 'If East Germany Could, We Could' (VIDEO)

Why is Joe Miller citing a totalitarian communist country as an example of how we should control our borders? And what would Ronald Reagan say?

Not even going to bother reading the thread to see if it has been pointed out, but there is a very fundamental difference that you are missing. Strengthening a border to prevent unauthorised and uncontrolled immigration into a country by people who are not citizens of the country is very different from building a wall with which to imprison your own citizens by preventing them from leaving.

I agree. Then why did Joe Miller mention East Germany?

Why not seal our borders to illeagal immigration?
Because the notion of sealing a national border has NEVER proven to be practicably possible. Because NOBODY is going to propose a huge wall along the Canadian border. If you want to discuss politics, this is the correct forum. Fairy tales are over there ----->
