It seems the cult of Reagan is trying to get his bust carved into Mt Rushmore again. They say this should happen because "Reagan was the most successful president of the 20th century" based upon whatever made up metric the Reagan Legacy Project uses.

I say if they carve Reagan into it they should also carve in FDR and Clinton.

I'd consider FDR before Reagan.

I disagree that Reagan was "the most successful."

FDR won World War II, ended the Great Depression, and was elected four times.

But we should actually probably just leave Mt. Rushmore as it is and not add any new faces to it.

I have been to Rushmore. It is a piece of art that brings people to South Dakota. I would imagine +90% of Americans have never been there. Much like Devil's Tower, it is way off the beaten path.

The Crazy Horse monument is much better as art goes.

The question that should also be asked is Can you add any more faces? From what I.ve read there is not enough good granite on Rushmore to add any more faces. If someone on the board actually knows for certain please post. From the pictures of the mountain I've seen there is not enough room for another face.

I guess if you live long enough, then you see everything ...

I recall in 1984 when Reagan was running for re-election that someone in Congress (I forget exactly who) pushed for Reagan to be added to Mt Rushmore.

However, the funding issue was never resolved.

The people in South Dakota did not want to pay for it since they did not want it.

While the people in Washington, D.C. did not want to pay for it since it would benefit the people of South Dakota.

Therefore, nothing happened. And I expect that nothing will happen in this case either.

Maybe Fox News will put up the money? Maybe they'll just carve it over Teddy since conservatives now hate him for starting the National Park system.

Reagan on Rushmore? Stupid.

FDR on Rushmore? Only slightly less stupid. FDR did more long term harm to America than any president until Bush 43. That FDR also did some lasting good merely balances the scales and makes him average. Average should not make it to Rushmore.

Clinton I've come to hate much less over time. Given time for some perspective, he may actually merit consideration.

All things considered, I say leave it the way it is. America is unable to reach a consensus of anything right now, and immortalizing should require consensus.

Describing the movement as a cult is totally appropriate and a bloody superstitious cult it is. We are just now suffering the inevitable outcome of the stupid things the old doddard did to the ecconomy and the environment by following the lead of that old biddy who was then haunting Number Ten Downing Street.

A lot of indigenous people were offended when the first chisel was laid to the mountain. Why aggravate it by carving the ugly mug of someone who further eroded their rights?

To put the old jelly brain there would be to claim that he was even in the same league with FDR, when clearly he wasn't.

And forget about putting him on the dime. There is too much history associated with that already. He is not a Pharoh who can deface the images of his enemies and claim their victories as his own.

FDR made America what it was at its peak of prestige and honor and prosperity. Old tofu-for-brains never forgave him for it.

Leave Mt Rushmore as it is.

Well the obvious answer is to make the left side of the face FDR and the right side Reagan

Personally, I love Reagan. How can you not? The man ended the Cold War and actually bankrupted the Soviet Union with a Jedi Mind Trick that he even had the balls to call 'The Star Wars Program'.

But still, putting him on Rushmore is just dumb.

In other news, Republicans have decided to paint Reagan in between the man and the woman in American Gothic.

Really, what makes people think they can screw with other people's art? Gutzon Borglum designed Mt. Rushmore and unless you get permission from his kin or estate, don't even think about messing with a piece of art.
