Rather Gets Surreal

MRC (warning, biased source) summarizes Rather's comments to the Post

"If the documents are not what we were led to believe, I'd like to break that story," Dan Rather ludicrously boasted Wednesday night to the Washington Post's Howard Kurtz days after virtually every significant news outlet in the nation had "broken" how Rather fell for a hoax. Though Rather insisted to Kurtz that "any time I'm wrong, I want to be right out front and say, 'Folks, this is what went wrong and how it went wrong," in discussions with reporters he's continued to be more interested in impugning those who have raised questions than in admitting his screw-up. A defiant Rather told Kurtz for a Thursday article: "I don't back up. I don't back down. I don't cave when the pressure gets too great from these partisan political ideological forces."

Its a biased account, but Rather's own remarks are so out of touch and arrogant that its almost surreal or like hes living a parody of himself.

Is this Elvis syndrome? Is he surrounded by asskissers who won't level with him on what hes done?

Yes! More! More memo threads! Having 283 isn't enough! We need more, I tell you!

I suspect it's either simple senility, or medication-induced mental imbalance. He's fairly old, and there are plenty of medications that can affect the mind, memory, and personality in strange ways.

This is the 2004 election forum and this is the hot story right now. Why is that you want to sweep this under the rug so quickly?

From what I can tell the only people who really think this is "the hot story" is Fox News and, well, you.

Why do I want to "sweep this under the rug?" Because I can think of 85,000 better uses of forum space than gazillions of threads about the same damn thing.

Take a look at how many threads you've started on this, corplinx. Would it be that horrible to just post these oh-so-fascinating tidbits in the ones you've already started about Dan Rather, CBS, and the End of Journalistic Integrity As We Know It?

Actually, I'm pretty interested in the story as well. Not just as a political issue but as a cultural one too. It's historic value should not be underestimated, especially if the source of the memo ends up being directly tied to either the DNC or the Kerry campaign (I suspect a little of the former and nothing of the latter).

I saw a poll recently...

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/CBS Memos.htm

...that strongly indicates I am not alone in following this story very closely. It isn't pretty but it's very interesting.

I think it's probably time to take the rug out to the clothesline and beat the dirt and dust out of it. Then we can start with a clean-swept floor.

First of all, that's fine. But why do we need another thread every time corplinx finds out that Rather says something?

I really doubt this memo thing will get very big, beyond some Republicans' wet dreams. Journalists fall for hoaxes all the time and some do some fabrications of their own; look at Jayson Blair--that story puts "memogate" (Thank you, Fox News) in the little leagues. It's old news--nobody gives a #@%$ anymore.

Already starting up with the 'Nothing to see here folks, we need to move on, and stop focussing on these claims and counterclaims'?

Well, since Kerry has been clotheslined

clotheslined (hockey) lifted by a bodycheck, hanging over the checker or the boards Orr was clotheslined just as he crossed the line. What a check!

A lot of thread are necessary.:D

Allright, I confess. I'm the Kerry operative who created the memo (only I didn't use Word - I used OpenOffice! Hah!) and sent it to my old college buddy Dan Rather. He's been performing well, too, we ought to give him a raise.

Maybe it's the fact that I'm not a Kerry supporter by any stretch of the imagination that causes me to really hate it when political forums are taken over by a BS "scandal" that has nothing to do whatsoever with the issues.

I respect your opinion on the matter. Mine differes. One wonders why, if you think these threads are unnecessary, you continue to not only click them, not only read them, but feel obliged to reply to them. Also, IMO, you are, by your very actions, indicating that it really is a bigger deal than you are willing to admit. IOW, you are just as interested in it, but your interest is in having it 'go away'. To make that happen, just ignore the threads and others might too. Had you not posted and expressed an opinion that I thought obviously and demonstratable false, I would not have posted either.

It has nothing to do with the issues but it has everything to do with the election.

I think you're right. If Mapes is fired like Blair was and Dan Rather resigns like Howell Raines did, the whole thing will probably blow over in a year or so.

Absolutely...and 'duh ishooz' have nothing to do with the election...since the insincere promises on education, defense, the economy, etc. are always the same old crapola.

'John Kerry is for education'

'George Bush is for education'

'Ralph Nader is for education'

'John Kerry is for a strong national defense, and lasting peace in our time'

'George Bush is for a strong national defense, and lasting peace in our time'

'Ralph Nader is for a strong national defense, and lasting peace in our time'

Gee...how will we ever choose?

Heaven forbid we look past the empty campaign rhetoric, and past the mudslinging about their behavior when they were young, and try to determine what is wrong with them now.

'No room for skepticism here at all...if you want that sort of stuff, why aren't you over on the skeptic's forums?'

Just like we need more whining about threads no one is forcing you into! Yay! Seriosly, Cleon, this is like the fifth time I've seen you grouch about other people's thread choices on the memo topic. Why not ignore them instead of complaining?

Kerry is going to loose because of the thinking that you just outlined. This is politics, not the truth and justice society.

You haven't had your thread-starting privileges revoked, have you? Because if not, you are perfectly within your rights to start one yourself.

Here, why don't you pick one of these. None of them have anything to do with the war, terrorism, or The Phony Memos:
  • Bush vs. Kerry on Social Security
  • Bush vs. Kerry on Medicare
  • Bush vs. Kerry on health insurance
  • Bush vs. Kerry on the deficit
  • Bush vs. Kerry on taxes
  • Bush vs. Kerry on education
Find one you like, express an opinion, and invite others to comment. That's how it works.

Why don't you ignore the the one complaining?

Why don't I ignore your complaining?

Why doesn't the person who reacts to this complaint do the same?

Why ask why? Whatever happended to "Dry" beer anyway? Was it just a marketing ploy meant to get attention? Was it an actual different brewing process?

Why is Jadakiss as hard as it gets? Is that even true? Why does he think that or find it important?

I think the real question is:

Why not?

Important questions all. I think we need to petition for another sub-forum on the dry beer question, at least.
