Rapture Ready Science

OH YOUR GOD...

I didn't read that forum before, but it's priceless. I quickly came across this gem:
This may be a stupid question, but what exactly happens when the poles flip?

Does the south pole move to the north and the north to the south? The whole earth flips upside down?

Yes, simply because the net electrical currents and flow patterns in a giant ball of liquid metal switch (over thousands of years), the earth will flip.

From what I have heard, the poles may not actualy flip, they will simply fade away, and if they do return, the north pole will be somewhere under russia.

The magnetic field flips- North is South and vica versa. All electro-magnets will be useless. No electricity, batteries won't work... you get the picture. It will take us back over a hundred years.

Funniest thing I've seen today.

but they would be uncomfortable with me proselytizing my unbelief

Second funniest thing I've read all night.

Unholy mackerel, CurtC, do they think the Aussies will all suddenly be walking right-side-up and we Norteamericanos will be upside-down?

I have an account at RR that is still active. My user id is Dragonrock and I have posted a few times but not in a year or so. I would like to keep my account, mostly because I like being able to block sigs, so I'm gonna be careful about what I say. Also, as RR is a soundbite society I probably need to keep my post to a single paragraph with may 4 or 5 sentences. So, what point would we like to address first?

So this collision thing somehow leads to the thinking that it will be a big involvement in the Rapture if it were ever possible?

These people are looking for doom and gloom as a pinpoint to predict the Rapture?

Am I on the right track?

Yeah, it's a reference to 1. the Book of Revelations or the Apocalpse and 2. One of the sayings of Jesus (I can look it up for you if you're interested) in which He says that there will be signs of his return including, wars and rumors of wars.." and so on. The thing that these folks don't seem to realize is that immediately after that He says, "no one knows (i.e. when) not the angels, only the Father, not even the Son."

So Jesus said even HE DIDN'T KNOW. How these fruitcakes think they know is beyond me.

Also, Revelations is clearly addressed to seven specific churches, not the world in general.

Hard cases make bad law. There are no easy cases.

Revelations was written by "John", not Jesus. And most of what's known as "The Rapture" is based on extrabibical sources, anyway. IOW, it's even more made up than the Gospels.

BTW, if the poles flip, the equator will stay the same right? So electronics there will still work.

Electronics will remain working everywhere.;)

The statements of Jesus regarding what are called "the end times" are in Matthew and Mark. Luke and the Gospel of John may have them as well, I didn't do a full search.

The only power generation system which could be drasticly affected would be geothermal,

A magnetic pole shift would have no effect of geothermal power generation. The magnetic field is generated deep in the earth. Geothermal energy involves hot spots much closer to the surface.

If the transition involves a reduction in the strenght of the magnetic field for a period of time, this could allow increased solar wind interaction with the atmosphere that could effect power grids, radio transmissions, etc. Once the transition was complete, the only noticable effect would be that magnetic compasses would point in the opposite direction. The magnetic field just isn't strong enough locally to effect electronic devices in any significant way.

I have heard theories that some birds use magnetic fields for navigation. If this is true, I wonder if such a reverse would effect bird migration patterns?

Heh, this reminds me of the argument I had with the scriptwriter of The Core. On ENWorld of all places.

Regardless, the Earth's total magnetic field strength remains fairly constant, divided between the polar strength (overall magnetic field which makes our north and south poles, created by the general rotation of the outer core) and the dipole strength, localized magnetic fields created by eddies in the outer core's rotational current.

Over time, these eddies build up to the point where the outer core isn't really generating a meaningful magnetic field any longer (and the dipole strength is at its maximum), and eventually it reverses from its original flow.

Some claim this is 'harmful' but the Inuit live under these conditions all their lives, as do researchers on the South Pole.

Sorry if I seemed to be saying that you were wrong. It's just that there are a lot of Christians who talk as if the entire Bible were written by Jesus, so I wanted to emphasize that most of what is known as "Christian" end times is made up by other people. It looks like Jenkins and La Haye are the latest to pass off their imagination as theology.

Yeah, as long as we cover them with tinfoil first.
