Rapture Mumblings

What can be done? Very little. There are plenty of people who want to trash the planet simply because they want more money or power, and deny anything they are told could be bad about what they are doing. A few religious nuts wanting to do the same thing will have no effect at all.
Yes.

Today I was sitting with my wife at a popular coffee shop in Portland, Oregon and had the great displeasure of hearing the conversation of a group of seniors discussing the rapture. Two of them were trying to convince others of the impending doom that non-believers will face in the near future. While this type of belief is sometimes humourous to me—today, I learned how dangerous it can really be. The last thing that was said, was that conservation and environmentalism were not important since the Earth would be destroyed soon. THESE PEOPLE NEED TO BE STOPPED AND SOON! Left up to them, the rapture will happen—not an event by some human loathing god but by human loathing humans who are in desperate need of psychiatric help. What can be done?
Whether it be abrahamic or eastern religions, it seems each one has a neurotically exaggerated idea of retribution. In eastern religions, eating a filet mignon could potentially land you into hell for 650,000,000 years, while in Christianity you are eternally condemned ("Ignorance of dogma is no excuse.."). Oh yeah, and you only get one shot. In Islam, it's the same, except with an emphasis on the superficial amentities of paradise. One wonders why any sentience like this would establish this standard for human dignity.

I'd like to think my friend and I had done better than that. Check out the PostRapturePost link in my Sig.

:)

Oh, man, good stuff. Love the testimonials.

I want to send a letter to myself in case I get distracted and miss the whole rapture thing. That way I'll know for sure that it happened.

On a lark, I submitted your site to Fark. It got insta-greenlit. I apologize in advance for the surge in traffic you're about to receive...

Aren't You Afraid of God's Wrath?
We don't believe in God, remember? In the event that the Rapture actually occurs, we will go to Plan B: "Lifetime of Sin Followed by Deathbed Repentance."

LOL! That really made me chuckle! And on a Sunday morning too - tsk!
;-)

So, the Fark thread degraded into a flamewar (success!), but before it did, you received offers from several Farkers to buy you beer.

I find it interesting that these old people say stuff about not worrying about the future when it comes to environment and conservation. However, I'll bet that these same folks tell teach their kids to save up for retirement.

It seems like a very selfish type of faith to me. Forget everyone else, you take care or yourself. No, wait, they "love" everyone because they spread the "good news" of Jesus and believe or you go to HELL!

And they accuse atheists of being selfish and uncaring.

If you spend some time in a church you will find that personal communications from God are almost always "Do whatever you want to do, screw whomever you want to screw, and it will all work out for the best."

Anyone want to buy some of my rapture insurance? Come on, the underwriting process is really easy. We just ask some simple questions about your spiritual beliefs and examine the state of the world to see how likely it is that 1)the end is near, and 2)you are likely to be whisked away into the clouds.

New low rates! Much better coverage options than Keerax Insurance brand rapture insurance.

Nominated. I might even put this in my sig!

I just figured with a 50 dollar a year charge they'd pay it thinking it was really cheap and not worry about it. And if you get enough people sending you a free 50 dollars every year then perhaps early retirement...?

So, in the world of rapture insurance you're the TV insurance that everyone has, and I'm the giant overpaid broker insurance that nobody wants that throws out BS about "service" to get people to pay insane commission rates...

...hmmm...

Rapture Insurance now only $40 a year!

Perhaps we could meld our insurance companies to better serve the needs of those who use our services? This would, of course, offer more options to the payee for the same low, low price.

60 dollar a year package:
Set percentages of the pay out to go to specific family relations that may have been left behind instead of splitting it all evenly. You never did like Uncle Joe's family anyway.

Now that sounds like a good plan.

Being a horrible godless atheist, I can ensure than the money reaches the intended godless horrible beneficiaries that everyone claims to love so much.

... and that they bought huge amounts of food, water, fuel, etc. in 1999, while telling everybody they would get raptured on Jan. 1, 2000 ...
