Are race relations in the USA better today or worse than 16 years ago?

Discuss: Opinions wanted on race relations currently in the USA. Are things getting better? Worse? Why?

Things are better now than they've ever been, notwithstanding the efforts of a few to drag us back into the bad old days.

Watching the news it may not sound like it, but all the stuff that comes to mind when you think of race relations, that's been happening the whole time, you just never heard about it until now.

Better or worse by what metric? By the metric that infrequent events get wall-to-wall media coverage and seem more statistically significant than they are? Or the metric that these events are actually getting national coverage?

I'm curious those who think race relations are better now -- in what ways? Please describe how you feel things have improved in the last 15 years in race relations. I personally don't agree. I think anytime labels are tossed out, and group lines are drawn it will not lead to positive outcomes. In this case, I think BLM and some splinter groups are doing just that. Causing more harm, than doing good.

16...that's tough.

Hatred of some people is far worse. I'm thinking of islamophobia, specifically - and yes, that's technically not racism. But folks went from "basically, white" to "attacked in the street".

Or did you mean black-white relations. Those are about the same, overall...

I think that is a great example of what happens when we do as described. Label people, people sectioned into groups -- divided. I'm not saying we should forget anyone's culture or history, nor should we try to push ours on others. What we should do as humans is realize we share this space and no matter what tone of skin you bare, or history your ancestors have -- we are always better united than separated.

Between the White Americans becoming a minority soon, climate change reducing American territory to this and polarising politics, I think we've seen nothing yet.

More racial intermarriage, more interracial friendships.

From that POV, things are better.

Maybe, but in the grand scheme of things, the US is becoming more politically polarised, you have America about to become minority majority within ~30 years, climate change going to rev up soon. That does not make for a healthy recipe. I mean, Mexico and Syria are ethnically diverse, didn't stop them from having unrest.

You mean that most residents of the USA will be foreign nationals?

No, more like White people in the USA will no longer be the majority. Considering how polarised American politics has become now, wait until you see how it becomes in 30 years time, especially when the polar ice caps melt and large chunks of the US are in the sea.

So to be an American you have to be white?

What about all the other races born in the US? They aren't American?

Is it because somehow you think white people got there first, so only white people can claim to be american?

Bad news. Native Americans were there a long long time before. At best white people are put up with as annoying visitors.

Do you think being white is somehow a special thing?

I'm talking more from an outsider's perspective. In short, US politics and society is predicated on there being a white majority. With that diminishing, you are going to get a lot more messiness to come. Combine that with climate change getting worse and swallowing up much of the US landmass and you get a recipe for disaster.

Just personally as an outsider, I don't think of america having or even needing to have a white majority

Never enters my mind really

To be perfectly honest, it makes sense when you think about how Trump got to where he is. And diverse states/organisations really don't have a good history of keeping together when bad times occur. Look at the dysfunction the EU is facing right now with a recession.
