Coming soon to a pet near you!

Rabies pet vaccinations have fallen off a cliff at the exact time rabies infections in the wild - and humans - reach highs not seen for many years.

a nationally representative sample of Americans that nearly 40% believed canine vaccines were unsafe and 37% believed that vaccines could lead their dogs to develop cognitive issues, such as autism.

Quite right - who would want an autistic dog when you can avoid that and catch a disease that will kill you in screaming agony?

It’s OK, Trump can sign an executive order banning rabies statistics and set them at 1000% less than under Biden.

Wait! Wut?

Dogs with autism?

*Checks date*

Over a third of your berks thinks dogs can be autistic?

This makes your election figures more understandable...

Just today someone on my socials described a spicy stray kitten she'd been working with that suddenly got much more calm but also injured her; she got worried, went to the vet. They were also suspicious enough to destroy the kitten to test it and yep. Rabid. Now she and everyone who's been in contact is getting shots, and they've had to trap and destroy all the other local strays.

She posted to remind people to watch out for 'dumb' rabies as well as 'the traditional pop culture cujo' rabies.

Had you not heard that one before?

It's at least several years since I saw vets bemoaning the downturn in parvovirus vaccinations because autism.

Every day, Einstein's axiom about stupidity becomes truer.

I'm UK-ian: our loons are stupid about other things...

Oh, and we don't have much, if any, rabies.
You should tell them about autism in dogs, so they have more to be stupid about - I feel that spreading it thinner must be an improvement. Or msybe not, since it hurts the dogs

We don't have any rabies, but our loons are against pet vaccines as well, so that'll probably be a thing of the past anty day niw.

Yeah, people are conditioned to expect frothing and mania, the calmness is unexpected.

Dying in painful screaming agony is a small price to pay if even just one dog can be saved from TEH AUTIZM!!!

I've had cats in a few jurisdictions, none of which mandated rabies vaccines if we reported them as indoor-only cats (which we do, and which they are). That said, we do give them the vaccine anyway.

Baby goats with rabies at North Carolina mobile petting zoo prompt calls across multiple counties to contact health officials (CNN, Aug 29, 2026)
Multiple baby goats at a mobile petting zoo in North Carolina were infected with rabies, and authorities are asking anyone who had contact with the animals to reach out to health officials about potential exposure to the rare but deadly virus.
(...)
Exposure may have happened at 10 locations, including an assisted living facility and back-to-school bash, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services said. Those affected are urged to contact their local health department to determine whether they need medication to prevent infection.

Four baby goats at mobile petting zoo in North Carolina test positive for rabies (NBC News, Aug 30, 2026)
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services said the petting zoo held events involving children and elderly people between July 28 and Thursday.

I pity kids with zealous anti-vaxxer parents – or people at assisted-living facilities with anti-vaxxer staff.
Herd immunity by infection, anyone?
By the way, it's a little too late to prevent infection if you already had contact with the baby goats, but the rabies vaccine works even post-infection if you get it soon enough.

A friend looked after the last case.
