Question for Canadian forumites: "Merry Christmas" illegal?

And heaven help you if you own an Italian restaurant and want to put words like "pasta" and "calamari" on the menu.

My sensei was a victim of this zeal. He owns three stores, one of which sells "vintage" products, and it's advertised as such. There's also a "Authentique: Not made in China" slogan. They sent him warnings for that.... without even realizing that the word "vintage", despite its English origins, is actually in the French Larousse. They don't even do their homework before harassing people. And of course, he can't translate the "Not Made in China" tagline, the joke just wouldn't work. But yeah, like removing that will suddenly protect the French language... idiots.

If Republicans want a good example of a nanny state messing with small businesses, pastagate and what followed would be a really good one right there.

Surely you meant Warrior Princess Marg Delahunty?

I recently learned that beneath his American candy coating Jason Priestly hides a foul Canadian center. Or as he would likely spell it, "centre"! Alas, even our most prestigious ZIP codes are not safe from the insidious infiltration of Canadia! Be warned, we will fight on the beaches, we will fight on the landing grounds, and we will never accept Spinner settling down with Emma. It just made no sense. They were pretty much enemies all through school! Why would they suddenly not only hook up but get married on impulse?! I can forgive the whole killing JT thing, I can even forgive the idiotic Rick business, but Spinner and Emma? A thousand times no! We will bury you, Canada!!!

Thanks, everybody, for allowing me to continue in my quiet superiority.

Just to clarify a few things about the person who made the original claim, because I found the assumptions interesting, although understandable:

She is not old - in fact, in her late twenties. She has an advanced degree and works in biological research. As far as I'm aware, she is not a religious fundamentalist.

She didn't make her statement in an angry or combative or despairing way - just as a matter of fact, like you might say, "It's supposed to rain tomorrow."

Some Canadians have an exceptionally dry sense of humor. Perhaps it was either a joke or troll bait.

No one present pulled out an internet device and started searching for evidence of such an outrageous claim?

Canada is so much closer to the North Pole, they must be sensitive about Xmas lest Santa frown upon them for he has missiles capable of reaching Toronto, their capital.

That's why almost all of them live near their southern border. Santa didn't always have that kind of range.

Toronto? Methinks thou jest.

Merry Christmas (or Joyeux Noel to use our other official language)

I seem to remember French Christians arguing that Christmas in French is still something like Christmas, and that "Christmas Season" is Noël.

They think it is wrong to cut off the Christ part like how the Engligh Christians are against the abbreviation Xmas.

(Or something like that, I don't remember the argument exactly.)

I did think about it being a leg-pull, but I've seen her make jokes before and it was different. As a matter of fact, I questioned her about it and she seemed to believe what she was saying.
