Queensland Floods

official death toll now 12, 67 missing

ETA: apparently a number of other bodies have been sighted but not retrieved so are not included yet in the death toll. The 2 additional deaths added now were not included in the original "missing tally". :(

Now reporting sewage systems west of Brisbane have failed or are failing and raw sewage is going into waterways, with risk of disease and sickness now adding to the misery.

Grantham again. I think it's the Pub[/CENTER]

All photos courtesy of ABC News.

I'm pretty sure that's a house smashed up against the pub.

Awesome photos. It's amazing only two people AFAIK died in Toowoomba

Very sad. When our company won a government contract in Brisbane and offered a lifeline to about a hundred people who were about to lose their jobs with an unsuccessful tenderer, we held the induction at the Regatta. The vibes were wonderful and it was one of the high points of my career. I stayed back and had some drinks with our new staff (my hotel was walking distance away), and meet up with people whenever I can when I'm in town. I really hope it survives.

Yes, hopefully it won't be too badly damaged. It's a veteran of many floods after all. Did you notice the flood markers in the first photo?

Cyclone develops off Pilbara coast

Wednesday, January 12, 2011 - 14:19 EDT

A tropical low off Western Australia's Pilbara coast has developed into a cyclone.

The Bureau of Meteorology says Tropical Cyclone Vince is about 1,000 kilometres to the north-west of Exmouth.

The category one cyclone is stationary at the moment.

It is not expected to affect the coast in the next 48 hours.

Yes I did, but the building and OH&S regulations were not like they are today.

Crikey! When's it going to end? I'm glad 2012 isn't that far away.

Flash flooding hits Victoria

Wednesday January 12, 2011 - 13:52 EDT

Twelve homes in the tiny town of Natimuk, in Western Victoria, have been evacuated because of flooding.

About 100 millimetres of rain fell in the town overnight and there are concerns the Natimuk Creek will burst its banks.

A woman was rescued from her car after getting trapped in flash flooding overnight, and an elderly woman was also rescued after flood water swept through her home.

Several businesses on Natimuk's main street have flooded and locals are desperately sand-bagging their properties.

Not that far from our own Ophnia Nay. :(

The Medina? I've stayed there.

Nah, it was a mates dads place down the street from the Medina, right on the river. We house-sat for a week while he was in the USA for work. There's no chance it won't be flooded, it was literally on the waters edge.

Wow we lost the ashes and then turn a HAARP gun on ourselves. Can this year get any better?

Jesus, does it never let up?

I remember thinking that with the brushfires -- was it just last summer?

Just when you don't think it can get worse, it does.

Not that far from our own Orphia Nay. (Fixed that for you, lionking.) :(

Thank you for confirming that. I was already somewhat familiar with Australian geography (thanks to you all and a niece who spent a year or so there), but I've been looking at a lot of maps of Australia lately.

Yeah, but you have to remember that the Pilbara is as far away from Brisbane as London is from St Petersburg.

Well what do you expect when you try claim an entire continent as your own? :P

Let's hope the NE has a very, very light Cyclone season.
