Wrong Century? :boggled:

REPENTIGNY, Que. – Most people are skeptical when it comes to ghostly possessions and hauntings, but not the Catholic Church.

Quebec Priest Luc Beaudoin has performed a dozen exorcisms since he was ordained in 2006. He maintains that all too often people open the door to the spirit world without realizing the dangers.

“Sometimes, people have held seances or dark ceremonies at the homes I visit,” he said.

“You need to take these things seriously. You can’t play with those types of practices. The Ouija board, for example, shouldn’t be taken lightly.”

Beaudoin said someone needs to intervene if paranormal activity is present in a home.

“Evil has invaded the house and only faith can overcome it,” he said.

In an hour Beaudoin can exorcise a house by blessing the home, reciting prayers and reading carefully chosen psalms.

Interesting. I knew that the the Catholic Church still did exorcisms, but my understanding is that it was considered sufficiently dangerous that only officially recognized and licensed exorcists were allowed to do them, that they had to be approved in advance by the local bishop, and that there were only a half-dozen or so exorcists left, all operating out of Rome.

I wonder if the good Father is playing by the rules....

Are you saying he's a maverick exorcist? There's gotta be a film in that.

"BEAUDOIN! I'll have your crucifix for this!"
"What about the rights of that little girl?"
etc

Please let his bishop be a perpetually-enraged black man.

That right there is a memorable turn of phrase. It instantly brings to mind eye of newt and toe of frog.

"Just give me two days Bishop, that's all I ask, 48 hours to get this evil bastard back where he belongs..."
"OK Beaudoin, two days. But remember I've got the Cardinal on my back and the whole of Rome about to come down on me like ten thousand tons of brick... keep your cassock tied right and crucifix handy, 'cause if you screw this up, you're gonna need it..."
"Thanks boss you're a sweetheart"
"Don't you forget it, now get outa here before I change my mind..."

"I've got the Pope up my ass!"
"Makes a change from a ten year old deaf kid, right Bishop?"

"One more crack like that and you'll have the whole conclave up your ass, and it won't be incense you smell burning..."

I believe Canon law still requires each diocese to maintain an exorcist, though except in emergencies a license for exorcism must be obtained from the diocesan bishop or the priest can face disciplinary action. I met the Dublin diocesan exorcist, of the time, about twenty five years ago, he was an elderly academic psychologist.
It wasn't a professional encounter professionally despite the rumors.:D

I believe that the kind of exorcisms that are 'controlled' by the RC church are those where an individual has been possessed. Evil spirits in a house are an entirely different thing...just spray some holy water, read some psalms, and tell the demons what bad boys they are, and they'll go away.

Where's the Picard Facepalm when you need it?

This is interesting, but it isnt an official site. Everyones doomed!

Such possessions or manifestations frequently occur to those who have used or participated in the following:

* Ouija boards, Seances, Magic 8 balls, Palm reading (even as a game), Tea leaf reading, Fortune telling, Potions, Incantations, Yoga (even as exercise), Martial Arts (in most cases), Dungeons and Dragons, Harry Potter Books, Eastern Mysticism, Tarrot Cards, etc.

It does say however

He added that while there are "very few cases" in which the rite is used, the rite of exorcism-- which can only be used under the guidance of the local bishop, and with the consent of the person suffering diabolical possession

ETA... iffy putting that link in, it's a fundie site, please ladies, avoid the men vs women page if you don't want apoplexy

That's a good point. What he describes sounds like a blessing--I believe the article even refers to it as a blessing. Performing an hour-long house exorcism may be a bit silly, but it's unlikely to do harm; it may ease the residents' minds. Expelling "demons" from a human is quite different, much more serious and potentially harmful.

You forgot the part about collecting the cash. In my experience, the RCC doesn't do a whole lot for free.

What was that?

Sledge and I were engaging in a little derail involving a rogue Priest being berated by his boss. We were trying to use as many bad cop movie style cliches as possible.

I'm disappointed it petered out before I could get to the part about the boss complaining about his ulcer, how he is only months from retirement and that he is getting too old for this ****.

I'm disappointed more people didn't go for it. It made me chuckle.
