Merged Qatar scandal/GCC nations cut ties with Qatar

It would be a smooth move to push up oil prices - something Russia desperately needs to happen.

If Russia had a financial motive for all of this (and I don't think it's clear if the Russian Government is involved, any Russian hackers could be independent of the regime) it would be due to Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), not oil. Russia is the world's second largest producer of LNG, Qatar is the largest producer.

Oil prices increased modestly when this crisis happened but I don't think by an extravagant amount.

Turkey to fast track legislation approving troop deployment in Qatar

Turkey's parliament is expected to fast track on Wednesday existing legislation to allow its troops to be deployed to a Turkish military base in Qatar, officials from the ruling AK Party and the nationalist opposition said.

The move appears to support the Gulf Arab country when it faces diplomatic and trade isolation from some of the biggest Middle Eastern powers. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain severed relations with Qatar and closed their airspace to commercial flights on Monday, charging it with financing militant groups.

I am really hoping that Turkey sending troops is to send the message that "everyone needs to sit down at the negotiating table and work this out and not do anything reckless".

Turkey is a NATO member so that gives me some comfort that the disputing parties will resolve this diplomatically rather than risk military involvement.

But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous about where this is all headed.

Meanwhile the Iranian Government is probably sitting down with a big bowl of popcorn.

Turkey only just got its nuts handed to them by the Kurds. The idea that they might come under fire in Qatar and try to invoke the 5th is a very scary prospect.

This is pretty scary. President Trump's first proper international crisis...

And at a time when his incompetence is at its highest since the election. I'm going to be optimistic and hope the revelation the news was fake calms things down.

Trump's ignorant Tweets are still an issue but given how stupid he must look to foreign leaders, perhaps Qatar leaders will ignore them.

It looks like the situation is being used to pressure Qatar to withdraw support from whichever extremists the Saudis and the UAE are concerned about.

Qatar: UAE and Saudi Arabia step up pressure in diplomatic crisis

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have increased the pressure on Qatar, insisting diplomatic and economic relations would not be restored until the tiny Gulf state breaks all links with the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas and Iran.

The Saudi foreign minister, Adel al-Jubeir, who is due in Berlin for talks with his German counterpart on Wednesday, said it was up to Qatar, which denies funding extremist groups, to take action to relieve a block on air, sea and land links with its neighbours.

I'm betting that they are also demanding that Qatar close Al-Jazeera. Of course that has nothing to do with terrorism so they won't go out and say it.

They also haven't presented the evidence that the Qatar Government is supporting whomever it is they claim Qatar is supporting. Hamas is the most obvious one but Qatar claims they are simply doing peaceful outreach and that the US is fully aware of their work.
