Psychic Vs Cynic

Did any British psychics predict the subway bombings?

My research turns up "No."

Useless bunch. As punishment, they should be made to slick Acorah's hair.
Ditto for the Tsunami, 9-11, etc. And don't get me started on Acorah.

"but I'm feeling...can I say this? I'm feeling...it's as if...thank you sam...I'm feeling there is a woman, yes and she was...sorry Yvette but...can I say this? She was MERDERED."

Yeah, ok.

I ould imagine Randi is a banned subject on This Morning.

The sad thing is that 30 years ago Granada TV (who make This Morning) called in James Randi to help with an edition of World In Action presented by Mike Scott that was debunking Psychic Surgery in Manila.

These days Granada will show any old woo as long as it gets ratings.

It's even worse then that - don’t forget they were behind the TV series, "James Randi: Psychic Investigator"!

Something else I've just remembered from this weeks show: In trying to explain why she's currently scoring worse than the psychologist in the number of hits she's got right, Dolan said something like "I didn't reveal everything I sensed because some of it was too personal".

This was effectively before reading this weeks person, and from now on she would "just go for it."

Strangely, it didn't help her much (except for the person being read who found meaning in everything).

I emailed the show on two occasions with no reply.Mia Dolan is an actress from what Im told by webmaster of SNW forum(dunno if he means literally)and for someone who believes in such things to dismiss her she must be bad.
As someone who was responsible for the closure of her forum,I wish to go further and ruin her career!!

Agree with the sentiment, but it won't be easy to overpower "True Believer Syndrome". People like Geller, Van Pragh, Popoff have all survived and prospered despite continuous debunking. Even being totally crap doesn't seem to make a difference, as Dolan/Acorah. etc. illustrate.

Wish we could think of an effective way of dealing with these people.

ETA: 0870 333 0550 and Link

From that link:
Due to the accuracy of her readings, she has been called to the scenes of criminal investigations, including the murders of Jill Dando and Rachel Nickell...

Was she? By whom? Shouldn't ITV be told if their guest is lying to them?

(Note: She weaselly says "called to the scene", which doesn't necessarily mean that she was there while the police were...)

ETA: Ah! "the book describes Mia's most unusual and intriguing readings: predictions she made for "The Sun" and "The Daily Mirror" about Princess Diana and her experiences at the scenes of the deaths of Jill Dando and Rachel Nickell for "The Daily Mail"" Even so, shouldn't ITV be told their guest was called in by a newspaper, not by the police?)

ETA2: I e-mailed them to say,

"Dear This Morning,

On the webpage advertising your slot "Psychic/Cynic", Mia Dolan's short biography claims that "due to the accuracy of her readings, she has been called to the scenes of criminal investigations, including the murders of Jill Dando and Rachel Nickell". A little cursory research shows that she was asked to those scenes, not by the police, as one might infer from the wording, but by the Daily Mail. This is evidence of credulousness on the Daily Mail's part, not accuracy on Mia Dolan's part.

Could you perhaps ask her if she claims to have ever assisted the police, and if she does, check her claim with the police force in question? Otherwise, please remove this gravely offensive and misleading claim from your website."

Bloody well said. But looking at Richard Bacon's aura I notice there's a lot of indigo which means he doesn't give a toss!

That would be 'partly' responsible Azrael ;)

Whats betting ITV don't reply to your email Matabiri.;)

Pretty good odds, I reckon. And I doubt Richard Bacon will even see it.

Roughly what time's the slot on This Morning, anyway?

Two weeks ago it was around 12 noon and I think it was probably the same this time. It's only on Mondays.

If there's one thing I hate doing it's transcribing television dialogue, but I couldn't resist doing it again.

I've commented on Monday's show, my main motivation being that Mia apparently did better this time.

'This Morning' II

Thanks! I'm going to write it up sometime soon, just waiting for some stuff fom NG.

I think it went out in the US around 8th August where it's called "Is it real?" 'Animal Oracles'.

Cheers,

Tony

I've just read your commentaries. Bacon does sound almost uniquely evangelical about the egregious Mia. What's she doing for him behind the scenes?

Every week I keep thinking I will ring This Morning and point out a few facts to the researchers. But then apathy takes over,as is the thing when promoting skepticism.A quote from Ian Rowland springs to mind about nailing jelly to the ceiling(doesnt work and is frustrating).
Having had a ten page discussion on SNW forum about Ouija boards, how true that phrase is!!! ;)

Saw it today. There was no reading since it was the last one, and they're deciding their scientific experiment with a phone vote.

I have to say their sceptic is a bit of a sack of potatoes. When Bacon offered "your watch will stop" as an example of a specific hit, he didn't mention this is a pretty stock phrase nor that there was a four week window for the prediction to come true. When faced with examples of Mia's hit, he could have replied with specific misses (he said he'd read the transcripts of all the readings) but he didn't. Instead, he went down the old road of saying they were "lucky guesses": an argument that doesn't really convince unless you put it into context.
