Hi everyone,

There is a local medium who I used to listen to - his radio show - as a believer. Now that I'm a non-believer in what the New Agers and self-proclaimed psychics and mediums promote, I've read up on cold reading as well as lots of great threads here about mediums.

I have downloaded this medium's podcasts of his blogtalkradio show to listen to them all over again - with a new skeptical perspective. OMG, what a John Edward clone!! He boasts about all of his paranormal experiences, his abilities and his ego is cloaked under the guise of how he "is honored to share my gift with you all." He cold reads like you would not believe! And I am so mad that I actually believed him. I wish I could provide a link so you could listen to a snippet of his shows, but I can't as I'm a newbie.

The thing is, I hate to admit it but it seems like sometimes he really is making some kind of connection - he gets a few really good hits that provide a bit more detail. Last year I called in to his show and although I did ask specifically about my "spiritual path" - since he requires VERY SPECIFIC questions, of course - he paused and immediately identified that I was having prophetic dreams. That is exactly true. I was blown away, and of course because of that major hit, I automatically believed every word after that.

Listening to him now, I can tell that he cold-reads with the occasional major hit. When someone asks about their spiritual path, like I did, his usual scripted response is, "Oh you're a healer, you need to get into Reiki, yoga, acupuncture...you're very intuitive.." But with me, the first thing he said was my dreams. He was right! And I wish he wasn't, so I could debunk him completely.

I know a lot of you are skeptical of prophetic dreams. I only know what is going on with me and I could write pages of dreams that have come true, that I'd have no way of knowing. Basically, I wish that he didn't have that hit because I am 90% close to declaring him a complete fraud. But because of certain hits, I now think that he might have a TINY ability. What I'd really love is for someone here to help me disbelieve, lol!

Please, someone, give me reason to doubt his good hits. How would you explain a few really good hits - just a lucky guess?

There was something else he said - he predicted that I would be involved in a drumming circle. Now THAT, I did not believe when I heard it. I do not drum, nor would I ever be involved in a drumming circle. Now I hate to say this - but a few months later, I was hanging out with my husband and siblings, on vacation. We sat around the outside fire and someone brought out some drums from their basement. They started drumming just for the heck of it (we were drinking, lol! I realized that I was sitting around a drumming circle. I thought of that "prediction." I hope you all could convince me that he does not have any kind of ability, that really specific, super lucky guesses do exist.

I wish you could listen to him. Am I allowed to type a name?

Hi Kataleena. I was going to welcome you in the Welcome Thread, but that musty old pharoah guy took care of our Welcome Wagon duties already, so I'll just append it here.

First of all, I'd say that "naming names" should not be frowned upon if they are already a public presence. They're open to scrutiny as anyone should be who offers out a service to the public.

If you have a legitimate link you wish to mention, all you have to do is post it with spaces or leave off/translate one of the characters.

Like www . randi . org
Or WWW dot Randi dot org

Someone will come along and close up the gaps or correct the syntax for you. I'd think we'd be very interested in hearing the readings.

Last year I called in to his show and although I did ask specifically about my "spiritual path" - since he requires VERY SPECIFIC questions, of course - he paused and immediately identified that I was having prophetic dreams. That is exactly true.

Did you dream that he would say that?

I start with the notion that, if the person were really a prophet, s/he would be able to predict that the following things would take place in 2012, for example:
  • A prominent entertainer will decide to pursue a new career, and will get advice from Al Franken. This prediction came true, as reported by the New York Times on 12 April 2012, when actor Julia Louis-Dreyfus, preparing for a new job in the series "Veep," sought the advice of "her old friend and fellow 'Saturday Night Live' alumnus Senator Al Franken."
  • Two major Hollywood players will depart within a day of each other. This prediction came true when major Hollywood actors Charles Durning and Jack Klugman died on 24 December 2012, as can be verified by many sources.
  • One of the most popular books of 2012 will feature a pig. This prediction came true, when "The Hunger Games" became one of the most popular books (if not the most popular book) of 2012; the story features a pivotal scene in which the protagonist shoots an apple from the mouth of a pig.
  • The U.S. Supreme Court will uphold part of the US healthcare overhaul, but not all of it. This prediction (which was at odds with conventional wisdom) came true 28 June 2012, when the US Supreme Court upheld "Obamacare," but not the Medicaid expansion.
  • A planet will be discovered less than a hundred light years away that has the "right" gravity, temperature and atmosphere for life to exist. This prediction came true as reported 2 February 2012 by NBCNews.com and others, when an announcement was made that a planet 22 light years away had been discovered with the "right" qualities to support life.
  • The surprise Broadway smash hit will feature something outrageous, perhaps a fake but realistic depiction of a sexual act on stage. This prediction came true with the opening of "The Performers" on Broadway on 23 October 2012, billed as "an outrageous comedy about the adult entertainment industry."
  • An expression of extreme hatred will be made against Rachel Maddow. Extreme. Rachel will take it in stride. This prediction came true in February of 2012, when columnist Cal Thomas remarked: "I think [Maddow is] the best argument in favor of her parents using contraception." Thomas eventually apologized for the hateful remark, though Maddow took it in stride.
  • A major Star Trek actor will "beam up" to the REAL final frontier. This prediction came true in May 2012, when the remains of actor James "Scotty" Doohan were launched into space, and several reporters characterized the story as Scotty being beamed up to the final frontier.
  • Another near-Earth object will be discovered less than a month before it makes a close pass by Earth, and it will pass well within the orbit of the Moon. This prediction came true in the final week of January 2012, when asteroid 2012 BX34, two days after its discovery, passed the Earth well within the orbit of the Moon, in one of the closest asteroid passes in history.
  • Canada will announce that the penny will be phased out. This prediction came true in March 2012, though it was a total surprise to everyone; the Canadian government later described the event in language almost identical to the prediction: "In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Government announced it would phase out the penny from Canada’s coinage system."
I made these predictions, among others, and documented them in this thread. These predictions are all authentic, they were all serious, they were all made prior to the events predicted, and most of the predictions came true.

The point of this is NOT that I have a mysterious prophetic ability; rather the point is that I DON'T have any such special ability!! But I will stack my proven track record up against Nostradamus, Edgar Cayce, and any other self-professed prophets. They don't have a track record as good as mine!

What my demonstration shows is that pretty much anybody can predict the future with accuracy (although there are some "tricks to it"), and that if there were to be a claimant who said that s/he had a genuine gift of prophesy, the predictions would have to be very, very specific, far more specific than what you've described.

Forgive me, then, if a single non-specific lucky open-ended prediction doesn't exactly convince me of any special ability. I scoff, but I'm entitled to. My track record is better.

All that the radio 'psychic' was doing is changing his lies. He told you (OP) what you wanted to hear. The psychic/medium/new age woo is fairly closely related. This means that when someone rings him, wanting advice from a psychic, he already has a pretty good idea of the sort of things that you are waiting to hear. Healing/intuition/prophetic dreams are very common things for psychics to throw out precisely because they know their audience.

In short, he knew what you wanted to believe and he gave it to you. It's nothing more than that.

Is it "lies" or is it "prediction" or "prophecy"
when economists say when
the economy will recover?
Or when an investor predicts (by purchase of a stock) that a certain company or sector will do better next year?

When I predict to my teenager than it is a good idea to go to college instead of being a rock star - is that rational, or intuitive?

When I predict that a car driving aggressively and erratically on the freeway is going to cause problems, and therefore avoid it, am I being irrational or am I going with a feeling?

When I predict that a self-appointed "critical thinker" will try to make the world simpler than it really is - is that a special skill, or is that a conclusion that is justified by decades of watching "critical thinkers" make sophomoric reductions?

When you look at more and more "rational" predictions,
you realize that there is less and less that distinguishes them
from very similar prediction processes
that are called "irrational" or "paranormal".

Kataleena, "you have prophetic dreams" is not a specific hit at all. I'm betting that if you go to a psychic fair (so that you have the same type of audience that would call this fraud), and say the same thing to the first twenty people you meet there, you'll get at least fifteen hits. And if you tell the ones who say "no" to pay attention, they are having them but haven't noticed yet, you'll get credit for twenty out of twenty.

And one guy playing drums, and other people sitting in a circle, is NOT a drumming circle. (Apologies if I read your description of the incident wrong.)

And as to the larger point . . . if I picked your pocket the first nineteen times we met, and then you didn't catch me doing it on the twentieth, would you give me credit for being "a tiny bit honest?"

This received poor reviews and closed after 7 performances. I think calling it a "smash hit" is stretching the term to meaninglessness.

If you are comfortable sharing it, I am curious to know the name. Would like to do some research.
Thanx!

Actually, the reviews were lukewarm. I never saw it, but supposedly the play had some yucks but not enough for a major Broadway comedy, and its subject matter kept if from garnering a broad appeal. It wasn't exactly a hit, but neither was it a bomb.

No matter how you slice it, I agree "The Performers" wasn't a "smash" in the sense of being popular; but it was a smash in a different sense: the play suffered (as did some others) because Hurricane Sandy smashed into New York City. (You see what I did there? Nostradamus proponents do this all the time!)

In case anyone's wondering, the play is authentic. It starred Henry Winkler and Alicia Silverstone. Furthermore, the main parts of the prediction were that there would be a play on Broadway that would feature something outrageous, perhaps a fake but realistic depiction of a sexual act on stage. Whether or not "The Performers" would qualify as a "smash," the rest of the prediction was stunningly accurate. The play did appear on Broadway. It was billed as "outrageous." And it was billed as outrageous for precisely the reason mentioned in the prediction.

Yay! Thank you for helping me totally debunk this guy.

As for the drumming circle, we were all handed a drum, from a collection at my parents' house (where we were all gathered and though I felt totally silly, everyone started drumming, we had some tunes goin, like I said before, we were drinking, ha ha. I then stopped drumming and said I had to pee, just to get out of it. So I guess it did seem like the "medium" got a hit when he said he sees drumming in a circle coming up.

OK, his name is Joseph Tittel. He's based near Phila, PA and was featured on the Lifetime show about 5 years ago called America's Psychic Challenge. His website is his name, dot com. He goes by the name Spiritman and can be found on blogtalkradio under that name or by the show's name, "Journey into the Paranormal." I will give the link with spaces, as advised in the first reply above, filling in the obvious stuff that's missing: blogtalkradio com/ spiritman

ETA: His show started in 2009 and those episodes are one hour. He talks for the first 1/2 hour and then takes calls during the second half. In 2010 his shows were 1.5 hours, so the phone readings would start 45 mins into the show. Then the shows increase to 2 hours and his phone readings begin after the first hour. This is in case you wanted to listen to just the phone calls.

He will start just like John Edward. I fail to understand why, nowadays especially, anyone would want to be like John Edward. Anyway, he starts with the usual, “I’m getting a B name like Brian..(if caller doesn’t offer info, he moves on)..and they’re telling me to acknowledge the number 13, either January 3 or the 13th of a month (any month!!)..(if no bites from the caller, he continues)..and I’m also getting a male energy, someone younger, and to me, younger is under 60 (YES, he says under 60!)..(suddenly the caller gives him info! It’s her father!)..OK, he’s telling me he has a lot of regret and that there is some unfinished business, do you understand that?" Of course the caller says yes because that's a general statement. Then the medium would say, "OK, he's pointing to his head, did he die of head trauma or something to do with the head?" or "He's rubbing his stomach, did he have stomach issues?"

I find this ludicrous because first of all, he's asking questions, second because he just got done saying to the caller how the deceased is going on and on about regret and he misses everyone and suddenly the deceased can't speak anymore but can only rub his belly! Or point to his head! The visual of a guy rubbing his stomach is just funny. Or he'll say, "Ok, your dad for some reason is giving me the name TOM! He's yelling at me, TOM TOM TOM" but yet that same deceased person was able to eloquently talk about regret and sending love, blah blah? Yeah right. Where's the detail, Spiritman?

His requirement of all callers is that they MUST have a very specific life question. Of course it has to be specific because when it's not, he uses the tactic of "That's waayyyy too general, I could go on for 20 or 30 minutes on that topic" baiting the caller to book a reading, desperate for more information than the few minutes on the radio show. How convenient.

And he is quite rude to callers, too. God forbid if there's any background noise. Noise is annoying, but he will very quickly and rudely tell the caller to turn it down. He then tells THEM that it's rude to have noise...You can tell by the tone of his voice if he doesn't like a caller, for whatever reason. He gets real snippy.

My heart sinks when he cold-reads callers who are very depressed. His specialty is giving "advice from spirit" on the caller's career path or any path. There is NO proof that what he's bleating on about comes from "spirit" and he makes it up on the spot. He misleads these poor callers who hang on to every word. He actually has the nerve to say what "he sees" someone doing TEN years down the line. He told me, "You will write a book. I see you becoming a Reiki master." Then he added, "probably will be a Reiki master." PROBABLY? Not a good choice of words!

And for the record, he is completely wrong. I had told him I took Reiki level 1. [Don't make fun of me :(, I regret it] He's wrong because look at where I'm posting right now! An ex-new ager who wants NOTHING to do with Reiki on a skeptic forum! A ha ha ha!

I just want to add that with my above post, I feel I have just done society a good deed. I have tried to figure out how to spread awareness of this guy. I even thought of trolling in his chat room during his blogtalkradio show, ha ha. But that will just anger his followers and they will get all mad and defend Joseph. I was going to log in, quickly call him out on his cold readings, then log out real quick so he couldn't ban me from the chat room! He of course has a strict banning policy because he does frequently have haters. He actually says on air that these people are jealous because he is so successful. Now, Joseph, where's your "love and light" to these people?

I did, however, write him an email complaining to him about how his reading for one caller was almost exactly like his on-air reading for me. He had said, get ready to laugh, that I was a great healer, a shaman healer in a past life, that I have 3 native american indian spirit guides, one was a shaman, that I will write a book about "all of this," [my amazing shamanic experiences, I guess, lol!] and that they want me to work with crystals and minerals. Whatever.

Another caller a few months later got the almost the same reading. Scripted, I guess. I wrote that I was suspicious. Well, that got to his ego. I knew it would because of the way he always defends himself and his abilities on his show. Of course he mentioned that "someone wrote in and thought she was the only one who has Native American indian guides and who will write a book, well, how selfish..." Yeah, he called me selfish and arrogant. This is before I knew he was a self-promoting cold-hearted cold-reader.

Anyway, I feel good that I am speaking out. I hope you all have some time to listen to even one minute of one of his shows. You will be entertained! I still listen to his shows because every time I do, I get a true laugh. It is so comical. I see now how he has similar "scripts" for each category: relationships, finances, career, etc...and even in his "connections" it's the same. For instance, it's always "a younger male energy, tragic death, I get the initial J." It really is pathetic.

Hi Kataleena - welcome to the forum! As a former new ager myself and believer in all that sort of thing. Nothing to be embarassed about, and you are in a unique position to help other new agers who are on the fence.

A little rushed today, but as I was reading your post it occurred to me that by drumming circle he was probably referring to an actual Native American drumming circle. Maybe a traditional drumming circle, though those used to be all male, or maybe a more new age shamanic drumming circle group. It just so happened that you found yourself in a circle of people sitting around a drum one night, and so he got a hit. But in actuality, my guess is that isn't at all what he was getting at.

Kataleena,
I know that there are a lot of us here, and you're onto one of the topics that Randi is most aggressive about, so it's something that will kindle interest in the membership here.

May I suggest you look up ANY THREAD in General Skepticism & the Paranormal started by RSLancaster. Robert is one of the nicest people in the world and has done incredible work on exposing Sylvia Browne. Ex-Minister, above, is also a veteran of these battles. You could PM (private message) either of them for a few pointers.

Robert's approach is sort of Randi Lite. He's in your face like Randi, but he's neutral and pleasant and shows no rancor whatsoever. Robert's been described as a "gentleman of the old school". (Randi will go for the jugular, given a chance.) But woe to the psychic who either of them get their teeth into.

Yes, Kataleena should definitely do as much research as possible on the subject including your suggestions, Foolmewunz. May I also suggest to you, Kataleena, that you read the threads I've been involved in here regarding the topic of psychic mediums ( and more...including dreams, signs etc )..."Proof of Life After Death!!" and Remie's thread ..."John Edward - Psychic or What?"
Also, thank you, Kataleena, for giving us the name of the psychic medium that you encountered. I love researching this stuff! And remember, just because most psychics and mediums are fake, doesn't automatically mean they all are.

I think this post is one of the best responses in this thread (although many others are very good).

One thing I want to add, Kataleena, is that one of the most notable differences between JREF board and psychic message boards is that here no one is banned for content. Someone could write a post about how Randi is a fraud because there is no million dollars and the psychics are right anyway, and that post will not be deleted and that poster will not be banned. (there are some ban-able offenses, but calling Randi a fraud is not one of them.) I consider that difference to be exceptionally telling.

Welcome.

ETA (this message has been Edited To Add): I consider psychics who pretend to talk to a grieving parent's child exceptionally vile. Those guys and the guys who pretend to heal people really need to be stopped. I hope they are all exposed for what they are.

..............

Also, do you have a recording of your reading?

Kataleena, I've enjoyed reading your posts, and I recall hearing about Tittel awhile back and have been intending to look into him and see how he did at cold reading.

It seem you got his number! Good for you!

Oh, and please, don't bother feeling guilty about having been a believer. There are several here that were also believers. I may even - uh - know one. (Cough, cough).

Yes, you are right. See? I am still not weaned off from totally believing everything this guys says...grr :)

Foolmewunz, are you saying that those two you mentioned might investigate, contact and/or expose Joseph Tittel themselves? Or that I go to them for advice as to what I can do on my own? Either way, I will search the posts, and the posts of Robin1. Thank you for the advice!

I've read a lot of threads already here about mediums and many of the John Edward ones. They are excellent.

And I wasn't going to admit it, because I just have assumed most of you are totally against any kind of medium abilities, but I do think it's possible to have a mediumistic ability, just not the type that we all think of - the "Mainstream Medium" type. I do think Joseph Tittel has a slight ability. But I am now of the opinion that the term "medium" as we all over the world know it is now associated with these Mainstream Mediums who claim to have tons of information given to them ALL the time. Of course they have to claim that, or else they would have a boring TV show, radio show, book...no clients...!!

I now realize that the "real" mediums are the ones who do not look to make a business out of it, who do NOT call themselves mediums or even tell anyone that they are sensitive, who get subtle information and keep quiet about it , very modest, unless they know the person they have info on and can help. I know a few people like that and what a difference between these normal people and the ego-filled "professional mediums" desperate for business.

These real mediums get information NOT from a ton of random deceased loved ones, but just here and there, subtle info and usually pertaining to their own loved ones.

Anyway, I will check out the posts from those mentioned. Thank you for your support!!

How in the world did you come to this conclusion?

Welcome.

Also, do you have a recording of your reading?

YES!!! I do! Just PM me if you want the details.

I have it downloaded as a podcast but the show is 2 hours and I don't think I can post attachments. It's much easier to just go to the website.
