The first thing I noticed here is what might be one of the most fundamental ideas that drives conservatives these days. The proposal to eliminate benefits for unmarried couples is described as punishing married couples. And there you have it. Exclusivity itself is a right, and loss of it is punishment. It's not that different from the notion that extending marriage rights ruins marriage for those who used to enjoy them alone.

Maybe I'm getting carried away or something, but I see this vision of society as requiring layering, segregation based on rules of class or belief unrelated to need, as a symptom of something more than just a disagreement on policy. It is a deep, fundamental, existential wrongness in the way some people think about things,

follower's brain as succinctly as I've heard. Bravo.

Can between-the-ears wrongness be treated and possibly sometimes cured? Yes.
Are most of us these days applying the right treatment in the right way? Um, well, no.
It takes patience and good will, and most of us are too fired up (and scared) to attempt
that approach. Scorn, insults, and angry jokes come easy and feel good; they feel like
fighting, without the risk.
