The President of University College Cork, Professor Michael Murphy, has imposed harsh sanctions on me for doing nothing more than showing an article from a peer-reviewed scientific article to a colleague.

Apparently he - Dr. Dylan Evans - was convicted of sexual harassment for showing (as I understand from another forum*) a devout Catholic college a peer reviewed article on fruit-bats - perhaps specifically mentioning that the female bats perform oral sex on the males during copulation (lucky bats)

Wow, next time I'm loosing an argument about sexuality to an opponent who provides valid evidence, I'm going to claim sexual harassment too!

Not only do female bats give male bats oral sex, but they do it while they're having intercourse. The male enters the female from the rear, and the female bends over to lick the shaft of the penis while he's thrusting in and out. I have never seen that in a porn film. Maybe there is such a thing out there...

You can get this for 600 Baht in Bangkok.

Yep, we all need to make conclusions based on the situation as described by the accused.

No sexual harrasser EVER did anything wrong. Just ask them. The victim is the one who is always overreacting.

Every single statement about this needs to be predicated with, "According to the person accused..."

If you follow the link and dig a bit, you can come up with all sorts of official documents and reports by external investigators which support the account.

At the moment, we're in the position where if you disagree with his account, you need to have better evidence than the fact that he was accused.

Worse. The accusation- sexual harassment by showing video of fruit bats having sex- is ludicrous. This is just very, very silly.

Did you read the complaints? Accorfing to the accuser he had been making unwelcome patting hugging ... toucjing behaviour for a while. He came into her office telling her how he admired Cassanova because he slept with so many women and the last incident asked her to read the article about the fruitflys. She got fed up with him and reported the incident.

The University president said the findings supported her side of the story.
The professor disagreed. But it was not just for showing the article.
Why do you think he showed her that article?

Here are the relevant documents in the case. Reading the investigation report it seems that the investigation found some of her claims to be less than credible(the phrase is casts serious doubt on some of her evidence).

There was more to the original complaint than the article (which was a very small part of it). I personally feel the complainant should have just told him to f*** off when he started with the unwelcome touching and kissing. I don't think the evidence provided puts us "in the position where if you disagree with his account, you need to have better evidence than the fact that he was accused" at all.

"We therefore find the complaint on this action is upheld even though it was not Dr Evans intention to cause"

It has to be offensive to the victim and to a reasonable person in the same environment as the victim. It has to be explicitly sexual (not sure about bat sex) or implicitly sexual (he hugged only ladies or showed the bat pron to only ladies). And, it has to be so severe or pervasive it poisons the work environment.

Doesn't seem like this meets the standard?

What's everyone wearing?!

The investigation did find it reasonable for her to be offended by the actions.

I agree. Why do you think he brought the article to her attention? If you do not know why you are naive or gullible.
