Presidential Primaries 2016

Agreed. But I am concerned that the GOP populist revolt is going to the dark side of populism.

In the words of that great statesmen:
Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate.

Anger and hate do seem to be two planks in Trump's platform.

Christie clearly has a reputation as a confrontational bully. But his brand of bullying is far different than Trump's - I really can't envision him egging his supporters on to kick the assess of protestors. Now that he is on Team Trump I wish some reporter would ask him for his reaction to the violence of Trump rallies.

I don't see how this means much, as none of the other nominees have either. Why single this issue out for Trump? It could be used against any of the others, with just as much validity.

Because half the GOP isn't just for someone else, they're against Trump. If the vote against him wasn't split 3 ways, he probably wouldn't be winning.

If it were not Trump, it would have been some other populist. A populist revolt in Republican Party -- and to a lesser extent in Democratic, -- has been building up for about a generation.

The one in the Republican Party seems to be much, much more successful, however. Oh well. I would love to peek into the alternate universe where the Democratic Party is running around with its hair on fire, trying to think of some way to stop Sanders from getting the nomination.

Yeah, the Democrats couldn't unite behind Sanders, which was what I expected. The Democrats did always have a much tighter grip on the liberals than the Republicans had on the conservatives. On the up side, the Clinton vs. Trump debates are going to be hilarious!

Maybe you will be happier if you just relize that your political opinions are much, much farther to the left then the American Mainstream.
And if you think that there is no difference between Clinton and Trump, your poltical blinders are even worse then I thought.

Wow, that's what you're going with? If that's any indication of the quality of the rhetoric out there, that ship is sinking faster than I thought.

Where did I say I thought there was no difference? If there were no difference, Clinton would be the clear winner, because she'd beat him on experience. Of course there's a difference.

Here is a rather long article explaining why someone like Trump was bound to show up sooner or later -- and how a few academics nobody heard of had seen it coming:

The rise of American authoritarianism

[In 2009], Hetherington and Weiler published a book about the effects of authoritarianism on American politics. Through a series of experiments and careful data analysis, they had come to a surprising conclusion: Much of the polarization dividing American politics was fueled not just by gerrymandering or money in politics or the other oft-cited variables, but by an unnoticed but surprisingly large electoral group — authoritarians.

Their book concluded that the GOP, by positioning itself as the party of traditional values and law and order, had unknowingly attracted what would turn out to be a vast and previously bipartisan population of Americans with authoritarian tendencies.

This trend had been accelerated in recent years by demographic and economic changes such as immigration, which "activated" authoritarian tendencies, leading many Americans to seek out a strongman leader who would preserve a status quo they feel is under threat and impose order on a world they perceive as increasingly alien.

These Americans with authoritarian views, they found, were sorting into the GOP, driving polarization. But they were also creating a divide within the party, at first latent, between traditional Republican voters and this group whose views were simultaneously less orthodox and, often, more extreme.

Over time, Hetherington and Weiler had predicted, that sorting would become more and more pronounced. And so it was all but inevitable that, eventually, authoritarians would gain enough power within the GOP to make themselves heard.
Probably something we have not seen since 1854...a major poltical party falling apart.
The article goes into that at considerable length.

Interesting article. Lots to think about after reading that. It appears to give more focus to a lot of the comments I have read in these US politics forums.

Actually you have a perfect example in Barak Hussien Obama.

He has already been defeated in court for overstepping his power. He claimed he wanted to transform America as we know it.

The right is simply pushing back in reaction to that. You libs won't figure this out until you're out of power. We don't want what your pushing and we're finally ready to fight for it.

Its cute saying were sucked by this so called far right authoritarian when just a few years back he agreed with many things the democrats did, and probably still does. Its just more BS to call him far right.

His "extreme" ideas are born of a business background. He sees things that can be done different and better. The wall is just one aspect. He also never said anything about banning Muslims and I now question this bogus poll that says 20% of repubs would not have outlawed slavery. That my leftist friends is just wholesale dishonesty, typical of the left and certainly the disgusting Vox site.

Pardon me for not fainting at these academics alleged prescience.

I recall Goering's war crimes testimony - just wave the foreign threat in front of people and they'll put sociopaths in charge.

This research bears out exactly that: the number one authoritarian score is foreign threats. Terrorism and ISIS, day after day. Trump stepped out in front, sure we'll torture them. We'll make Bush look like a pansy.

What's so heartwarming is the bipartisan support for the whole war on terror, with its totalitarian information system spy state. Parsing our every word for what they can get on us while murderers can walk across the border.

That doesn't mean I am for Trump's wall. I am not. I am against the police state spy apparatus. What we will get with him is the police spy state plus the wall, which will be ineffective but make for good income in the black market tunnel industry. Even penniless Palestinians or North Vietnamese can create extensive tunnel systems.

But it's exciting. I'm going to be one of the smart ones, with my boots at the ready. If they need a little fire to get emergency powers, just call me. After that, it is going to be really fun. Turn in your neighbors. Mandatory parades. Labor camps for immigrants.

The reason I find that article scary is, I often ponder how does a normally functioning society with normal modern cities evolve into a civil war? Your first reaction is, there is no way that could happen here. And maybe it couldn't, not enough people have actually taken up arms like the Bundy Bunch. But could enough crazy people back an authoritarian leader and what would the consequences be?

I have made a tentative decision to vote for Clinton if Trump gets the Republican nomination. If it comes down to a choice between a continuation of Obamas policies, a harder turn towards socialism, and a wildcard blowhard.... i atleast know what i am getting with the middle option. I dont like clinton at all but in a choice between three bad candidates shes the "least bad". It breaks a two election streak of me voting republican if it happens

I might change the vote later... if either of the other two improves by a miracle... not sure. But dont know about that right now

It's been the lesser of two evils for me in every presidential election I've ever voted in. The first of those was Richard Nixon, so it's been quite a while.

Maybe this should be in humor but all the results tonight are coming out much later than expected and the news media are scrambling to fill up their time.
