Presidential Primaries 2012

Yes. Which makes one wonder -- why does R. Santorum continue? Answer: There's still $$ in the campaign bank account, and he seems to be having fun. As for R. Paul (le père), he's on a mission from ... Mars.
I suspect for Santorum it's more he feels he's on a mission from God and the longer he stays in, the more he can spread the message and possible keep it relevant because once he's gone I think we'll see Romney rapidly trying to sneak towards the center.

He's a true believer and can't understand how, with God on his side, he's not winning this thing.

I saw some of his supporters in Texas are trying to get it changed to a winner take all primary.

Personal dislike for Romney? He believes Romney will lose to Obama. Since he doesn't like Romney and knows Romney will likely get the nomination, maybe he wants to make things as hard for him as possible.

Well, whatever it was that was keeping R. Santorum in this thing, it ain't no more. He's "suspending" his campaign, which is another way of saying he's shutting it all down except for some of the money-raising part. Speculation has been rampant in recent weeks that he would rather pull the plug than get beat in Pennsylvania, which was looking increasingly likely.

Ron Paul sees his golden opportunity. ;)

But seriously, hgc, thanks for creating this thread and keeping it going. It's been fun.

To increase his name recognition. Now he can go write a book or have one ghost-written and get higher speaking fees than before.

When did Newt drop out? Last I heard, he was still in.

I did it April 8 (http://www.internationalskeptics.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8182237&postcount=958).

It was abundantly clear that N. Gingrich was not actually campaigning for votes anymore, and that he has shifted to saying he wants to have an impact on the party platform, or some such doggerel. He's dropped out and hasn't bothered to say so explicitly and unequivocally. But, we're smarter than that. We know what's what.

At last we have some celebrity muscle in the race. Actually, Rosanne Barr started her candidacy for pres in the Green Party a few months ago, but I just found out. How come nobody told me?

Oh, and one more thing ... Since D. Trump long ago endorsed GOP nominee presumptive W. "M." Romney, he's getting struck off.

If your doing the Greens as well, Jill Stein is the frontrunner.

Here are updated (as of 4/9/12) results for the race for the Green Party's 2012 Presidential nomination.

Maximum Number of Delegates = 401
Delegates Allocated to Date = 86

Delegates Allocated by Candidate

Jill Stein = 62.5 (73%)
Roseanne Barr = 11.5 (13%)
*Kent Mesplay = 6.5 (8%)
*Harley Mikkelson = 1.5 (2%)
Uncommitted = 4 (4%)

*Not currently officially recognized by the Green Party of the United States

Linky.

I guess this is sort of a formality now, but Mitt won 5 more contests today:

Mitt Romney Sweeps Northeastern GOP Primaries

He also picked up 154 delegates according to current estimates, which is almost all of the delegates that were at stake today. Gingrich picked 1 delegate and Ron Paul picked up 4.

He now has 844 delegates in the bag and needs 300 more to clinch the nomination.

I believe that Obama surpassed the number of delegates needed to secure the Democratic nomination today too, not that there was ever any doubt about that.

Hi Everybody, It's been a long time since updating, and I think we're in a position to declare a few winners. With the "suspension of further campaign activities," it's time to strike R. Paul from the list of contenders, and hand the laurels to W. "M." Romney. While we're at it, B. Obama gets to retain the Dem crown.

On a side note, T. McCotter's curious campaign bears bitter fruit still. It appears that the pressure of a presidential campaign (such as it was; I never saw him in action) has caused the long-time congressman to fail to file enough unique signatures on his nomination petition for reelection, and he's out. Oops.

I guess there's little left to say in this thread. But I'll return if anything important develops.

You can cross Buddy Roemer off the list too. The Americans Elect thing didn't pan out.

Buddy Roemer quits 2012 race

Roemer's decision leaves Gary Johnson, the former New Mexico governor running as a Libertarian, as the only potentially significant third-party candidate left in the race.
