President of Haiti Assassinated

Haiti President Jovenel Moïse was killed overnight in a "coordinated, multi-person" attack on his home in the capital city of Port-au-Prince.

The acting Haiti Prime Minister, Claude Joseph, has declared a "State Of Siege" (a level between "State of Emergency" and "State of War") closing the country's borders and declaring Martial Law.

Apparently there's also some confusion as to the line of succession, since the President of Haiti's Supreme Court recently died of COVID and the President of the National Assembly position is currently vacant.

Haiti is competing with Somalia for the "worst ,most chaotic government in the world" competition.
IMHO both are basket cases;time and time again the international community has tried to intervene, time and time again it blows up in their face. Let;s just keep out of it this time.

Police in Haiti claim the assassination was carried out by foreigners, of 26 suspects, 19 men on parade to the press were Colombians and two US-Haitians.

Police chief Charles Leon paraded 17 men before journalists at a news conference late on Thursday, showing a number of Colombian passports plus assault rifles, machetes, walkie-talkies and materials including bolt cutters and hammers.

“Foreigners came to our country to kill the president,” Charles said. “There were 26 Colombians, identified by their passports, and two Haitian Americans as well.”

He said 15 Colombians were captured, as well as two Haitian Americans. Three of the assailants were killed and eight remained on the run, Charles said.

Now the "speculation" is growing that it was really an inside job.

There are mounting doubts in the country over the official narrative of events, which maintains that 28 mercenaries invaded Mr. Moïse’s home without any apparent resistance from his bodyguards.

The people that The Globe spoke with raised questions about the story of the attack that has emerged so far. They were particularly incredulous that the gunmen were skilled enough to get into the president’s house without shooting his bodyguards but apparently had no plan of escape. Mercenaries tried to hide in the Taiwanese embassy and behind bushes near the home, where they were surrounded and arrested by police.

“Nobody knows exactly what happened, but it looks like an inside job. How could they so easily access the former president’s bedroom? He was the most guarded human being in Haiti,” said Chantal Merzier Elie, a women’s rights activist who served as a foreign-policy adviser to several former Haitian leaders. “It doesn’t make any sense.”

The Guardian reported statements by assassinated Haitian president Jovenel Moïse's widow, Martine Moïse, who was herself shot, severely injured and airlifted to Florida where she is being treated in a Miami hospital.

The widow of the murdered Haitian president Jovenel Moïse has accused shadowy enemies of organising his assassination to stop democratic change, as a struggle for power intensified in the Caribbean country. Haiti has been reeling since Moïse was gunned down early on Wednesday at his home in the capital, Port-au-Prince. Martine Moïse, who was wounded in the attack, said her husband was targeted for political reasons.

“You know who the president was fighting against,” a voice recording posted on her Twitter page said, without naming anybody. “They sent mercenaries to kill the president at his home with members of his family because of roads, water, electricity and referendum as well as elections at the end of the year so that there is no transition in the country. In the blink of an eye, the mercenaries entered my house and riddled my husband with bullets,” Moïse said in the recording, describing the moment the attackers killed her husband. “This act has no name because you have to be a limitless criminal to assassinate a president like Jovenel Moïse, without even giving him the chance to say a single word." Among the many questions being asked is, how did the hit team gain entry to the president's residence without having shot or injured any of the president's security agents? Some in Haiti are asking, "How was that possible? Was it an inside job?"
