Pregnant women: have a drink or two!

A drink or two per week is the same as abstinence. If someone feels ok about a drink, what's the likelihood of keeping it down to 2/week?

I've alwaysh shaid a bit of a drinkie never hurt no one...... you're my besht friend, you are

I'm always skeptical of absolutes.

And NOBODY is ever an absolute teetotaler. The organisms in your intestines make about an ounce of alcohol per day. So I doubt the harm of one more ounce per day, we are built to handle it.

Seems to me there are two basic tenets in the Hypocratic oath:

1) First, do no harm.

2) Second, never ever recommend the benefits of alcohol.

That said, I suppose a knee-walking binge is too much for the little tykes. But the medicos never believe anybody about their alcohol consumption. Any daily drinker is considered "at risk" for alcoholism. They are a bunch of Martinettes. But that is the way medicine is practiced, all a game of numbers, with a death rate of one.

Oddly, ever time I see a doctor, although they always ask about alcohol, they never seem to comment on it. Even if I ask something about it, they sort of shrug. But caffeine, man; don't get them started on caffeine. It's the cause of all your ailments. They don't even want you looking at a coffee pot. Though I doubt it would be difficult to get any doctor to admit it, I'd be willing to bet that if you were forced to choose between a cup of coffee and a Manhattan, they'd rather see you have the drink.

According to one of the researchers on the radio this morning, the lower risk of behavioural problems in children of mothers who were light drinkers was likely accounted for by other factors.

[speculation]

I'd have thought the speed at which the 2 units were consumed and got into the blood supply would be relevant. I.e. Drinking 2 units in 5 minutes on an empty stomach would lead to a higher peak blood alcohol level than a small glass of wine consumed with a meal over an hour or two.

[/speculation]

Maybe, but who knows? The 'just so stories' we make up to explain the results are just hypotheses.

I think that's right. I doubt these drinks were consumed rapidly on an empty stomach. They were probably a small glass of wine or beer with dinner in most cases.

Well, I do, but I'm in no danger of getting pregnant.

One or two glasses of wine with Saturday dinner isn't a particularly difficult limit to observe, in my experience. Anyone who can't take one or two drinks a week and limit it to that may already have a problem.

That's about the level I drank at during my pregnancies.

How long ago was this? The idea of no alcohol during pregnancy seems to have been so well-ingrained over the last twenty years, that I would have expected you to be met with disapproval and dirty looks whenever you had a glass of wine (or whatever) in your hand. I got a five minute lecture from my sister when I tried to have half of a beer on my birthday. Or is this a North American attitude?

This seems similar to saying "driving your kids around without car seats or seat belts one or two times a week is okay."
