But I like spam. Fried, on toast with some Miracle Whip & Velveeta, and some pickles on the side!

Any wonder I have health issues?

Whey-hey, a new CT! Fantastic!!!

Unfortunately in an area I have zilch expertise in, having deliberately avoided any form of critical analysis of fiction since the throes of my SYS English at secondary school, back in the dim and distant days of 1986.

One might argue, for example, that the authors of these film scripts are responding to a very wide range of issues including societical views generally, marketing/public perception, and so on. One might also have to look at the demographics of the target audiences in order to determine patterns, and so on. Surely the study would also have to extend to other media, in particular TV, and consider comparisons within other cultural/policitical spheres?

There's probably a really interesting study in there somewhere. Why don't you try and put it together, Phil?

Hmmm, I can't wait until the PP of porn comes true- Orgies in the street!

But to add add some food for the trolls: There was a propaganda connection to Hollywood during WWII, through censorship. Did it die in 1945 or just go incognito?

Also, I noticed that in the mid 60s, the 'invading aliens' scenario became one of fewer nasties, more good guys out there. Not so many "War of the Worlds" plots, more "Star Trek", "ET" stuff. We got a kinder, gentler universe. So now I eagerly await their arrival to show us the way. I just hope they aren't the Ga-ould when they do get here. Or "Alien" or "Predator". Or ummmm maybe the pendulum swings? Or ummm maybe there is a point to ponder- for each of those supposed PP flicks, find one with the opposite message? Would that negate the CT? or only feed a bigger theory: the idea that there may be TWO Propaganda Powers at war here? Good verses Evil ? Now there is a fresh plot.

And maybe 'sweetening' my coffee wasn't such a good idea this morning...

How about you do this 'analysis' for a movie yet to come out. You know, so it kind of proves that you can show your conspiracy to be more then just paranoid rantings?

Soylent Green (1973)

Synopsis:

Thematic PP elements:
  1. The setting of the movie elaborates on a very simple but alarming scenario. Which is, if we're heading for (global) overpopulation this is what will happen to you. So the public are imbued with fear for overpopulation. The distinction between what is overpopulation and what is not overpopulation remains an arbitrary one though. Unfortunately however, as they always do, unquestionably the government will claim the role of decisive arbiter and trust on moral support of the docile and gullible public.

This programs the public, again on the basis of fear, to accept and support governmental future measures aimed at combating and reducing over-population. The 'exemplary' precedent of the country of China comes to mind, in which fear for overpopulation has successfully solidified into the public support of birth restrictive policies.
  2. The Elite are living the good life in totally cordoned off sections from 'the masses'. The discrepancy between the rich and the poor is thus accentuated and leaves the viewer a little more trained to accept the difference one day.
Suggested PP elements:
  1. The movie suggests a general sense of an elevated atmospheric temperature. The correlation of overpopulation with temperature seems evident. This may program the public to accept guilt and responsibility for it being the cause of global warming. As such, the groundwork for public acceptance of a carbon tax has been laid.
  2. Assault of a police officer, even the lesser offensive ones, will get you life in prison, the movie explains. This will train the public to blindly accept the authority of the police, making them literally untouchable.
  3. The rich rental apartments by default seem to come with an inventory prostitute ("furniture"). This familiarizes the public with the degrading and dehumanizing capacity a female might serve in the future.
  4. There's a blatant form of 'assisted suicide' instituted for the elderly people. This helps train the public to accept some governmental imposed form of euthanasia, since it is implied that the earth cannot sustain itself with too many humans around.
Does it, by any chance, have any effect on you/your theory that in the 70's they thought exactly the opposite - that a cooling earth/reasonably soon extension of polar areas was coming?

I know DutchPhil will never reply, but I have to ask about "Santa Claus Conquers The Martians"...

What about that one Phil? Was that part of the programming?
