Post-TAM Tour?

I'm just toying with ideas here, and nothing is definite. But if there's enough interest in some things, I might come to TAM just to organize a tour.

Idea 1- Rent a large bus with DVD player and PA and take a tour to Rhyolite Ghost Town and the Goldwell Open Air Art Museum. This is one of the best preserved ghost towns in the US and the museum is well, very memorable. We'd also stop in Beatty, which is known as "The place you visit the restroom before you go to Rhyolite."

I know a lot about the area and would give a tour as well as provide lunch on the bus. This would be an all day tour. Estimated expense (depending on many factors) would be about $30.

Idea 2- A more local tour to Red Rock Canyon and Howard Hughes old ranch, Spring Valley. Beautiful spots. Cost would be about the same ($30), as admission is charged for these areas. Tour would be about 5 hours. Could be we could find a geologist to join us. This could also be done Sunday afternoon, but I don't want to interfere with TAM.

Anyway, just a couple of ideas... could be a lot of fun and educational too. It's more fun doing these trips as part of a big group rather than with people in separate cars. I just did a similar trip for the American Humanists Association and they loved it.

I might be up for a pre-TAM tour, if there's any interest. I fly out Monday Evening, though. Depending on when these tours are, I might be interested. How long would Tour 1 take?

I would vote for Red Rock Canyon, the most! I know lots of folks who were already there. And, I was considering going to it this year, anyway. Almost went last year, but my posse complained that it was too hot outside.

Ghost towns also sound good, as an alternative.

Pre TAM tour would be just as doable... depends on what people want. I suppose I could do both.

You could probably twist my rubber arm to get me to stay for an extra day in Vegas if you led a tour on the Monday.

I'm a geologist. I've led two tours of Red Rocks in the past. Have yet to book my flight back from TAM. I could potentially be convinced to come on a geo tour... just sayin'.

I would be interested in something like this, either pre- or post-TAM. There was earlier discussion of going to the meteor crater and the south rim of the canyon. Is that still on the table too?

I will probably book my flights around May 1 so it would be nice to have a semi-solid plan by then.

I looked at those, and they'd both require an overnight. I think that might be a bit too ambitious for this crowd, especially after spending a full weekend at TAM.

I'm interested in joining a post-TAM day trip.

Pre-TAM I may be able to make work but prefer post.

I figured that the town of Rhyolite might have some rhyolite...

Let me know when you might need me, and I'll see if it works for my schedule. I was planning on flying back on Monday, but with enough incentive I might be convinced to stay through Monday night or something...

With more advanced notice, a post- or pre-TAM 12 trip to the Grand Canyon and Meteor Crater would probably work. I did this trip last year, and enjoyed it, and going with a crowd would be interesting. I stayed in Williams AZ last time, which was a neat little tourist-trap town that had a good bar and good local beer.

Leave Vegas on a bus Sunday afternoon, Sunday Evening in Williams, Monday do the Canyon, then the crater either Monday or Tuesday, depending on how much of the Canyon you can stand. Monday night in Williams again, then back to Vegas Tuesday day or night.

I'm up for a pre or post TAM day-trip! I'm especially fond of something that I wouldn't have to drive to do.

I am definitely (probably) going, have already made 2 nights hotel reservations in Flagstaff, but it will be more fun with other folks.

If you're interested, PM me and I'll provide the details and estimated costs.

Note--only if you have the time (Mon-Tue post TAM, I guess you can catch a red-eye on Tuesday night if you need to be back at work on Wednesday).

If you're time is limited, I second Red Rocks.

I'm up for a post TAM tour of Red Rock. Sunday or Monday would work for me.

I would suggest hitting Red Rocks as early in the day as possible before the heat kicks in. During a couple TAMs we've gone out there at 5:30am to go running, but oddly never had anyone willing to join us.

You never came by the bar to ask.
