Possible reason Obama/Clinton are chummy!

Just been reading up on it and it appears you are incorrect the president doesn't give orders to the FBI on who to investigate. It appears the claims that Obama could tell the FBI to not investigate Clinton or tell them to drop an ongoing investigation is more suited for the conspiracy section.

Actually, you are incorrect. FBI is part of the justice department which is led by the attorney general who reports to the president. In fact, presidents have directly interfered with investigations (albeit, involving a special prosecutor) look up Saturday night massacre.

Could you provide where you gained your information?
I was thinking more of telling the DOJ to not accept the FBI investigation to prosecute. But I'm curious.

Wow that's a lot of baseless, lunatic garbage.
You sound so sure.
And not even original, baseless, lunatic garbage.

The article you refer to, you must not have read. It is nothing like my possibility! But, hey...

Red is my reply.

Nope - reporting to does not mean can give commands to by the way. I've read up on this today spending quite some time on it and I have found nothing that says the president can order the FBI to drop investigations.

As one website puts it:

"....The Cabinet and independent federal agencies are responsible for the day-to-day enforcement and administration of federal laws. ...."

I did think it as strange that the FBI would be under the direction and command of the USA president and I'm glad to learn that the USA does not have such a system; after all that is the type of power dictators have not a well balanced and structured government. And despite whatever criticism there may be about the political system in the USA the USA was set up in a remarkably rational manner by people who knew what it would have meant for the president to have such powers.

I think that without any evidence, this speculation amounts to nothing more than DC fanfic.

I especially like the part where she storms into the Oval Office. Do all former cabinet members have the power to brush past Secret Service agents and presidential staff, or does that power go only to former First Ladies?

ETA also, what's the deal with ending his tenure with an asterisk next to his name? Does that show up in history books? In the title of his Wikipedia page?
It's his ass to risk anyway!!!

Just realised I forgot to hyperlink the above quote, that's from the Whitehouse website specifically: https://www.whitehouse.gov/1600/executive-branch

Today I've been to a myriad of sites as varied as the library of Congress and Wikipedia - it really is a fascinating area of research. Had great fun learning about the bits and pieces of executive power and limitations.

I just gave you an example of a scenario where Nixon did specifically interfere with an ongoing investigation....

Remind me what happened to that guy when everyone found out what he'd been up to?

Another great point! He was preemptively pardoned by President Gerald Ford.

That certainly put the kibosh on any investigation.

You and I are one hell of a team!

As an aside, this is a classic example of a thread in complete drift. This interesting-ish conversation is a million miles from any discussion of why Clinton and Obama get on OK.

Just because a system exists doesn't mean people will not try to bypass it or corrupt it. If you check your history, what he did was unconstitutional and illegal and not in his power.

Good example of this: http://www.loc.gov/law/help/usconlaw/pdf/tsp-house-judiciary.pdf

That article had nothing to do with the Saturday Night Massacre.

"Cox has no constitutional or otherwise legal existence except as he is a creature of the Attorney General, who is a creature of the President,''

'Interfere with' is not the same as giving a legal order. Please show us what law gives the President authority to order the FBI to drop an investigation.

No, Mr President – how the FBI bosses the White House
the FBI's J Edgar Hoover had an arsenal unsurpassed in the annals of 20th-century America. Forty years after his death, the FBI still has that power, along with the keys and codes to unleash it. It was the FBI that toppled President Richard Nixon,
