New poll shows most Canadians support abortion — with some restrictions

The poll found that 49% of Canadians think abortion “should be permitted whenever a woman decides she wants one.” Another 45% said abortion should “be permitted in certain circumstances.”

Just six per cent said it “should not be permitted under any circumstances.”

Comparable (more or less) US figures here: http://www.pollingreport.com/abortion.htm
Always illegal 20%
Canada really is a different country. :w2:

Not sure how you reach that conclusion but, amusingly enough, Canada Does not have an abortion law. See: Abortion_in_CanadaWP for the history as to why. ;)

You just said it. Canada supports abortion law with restrictions. Canada essentially has no restrictions.... That isn't what Canadians want.

Not all folks may like the status quo, but changing that status quo is opening a big political can of worms. And the government doesn't want that, at least not for the present. (And perhaps because there is no great upsurge of the public demanding that the status quo be changed. If there were, the can would be opened because the political worms wouldn't be so numerous.)

I think Canadians are quite happy to leave medical decisions in the hands of medical doctors.

Thus the current situation and the majority poll results.

That's the part you are missing. "Essentially has no restrictions" is not the same thing as "has no restrictions."

Canada does have restrictions and they are "essentially" the restrictions Canadians want. Of course there are always people who want more restrictions that fit with their religious believes but that fringe group can't get a foothold because Canadians seem to be done with the debate.

I want restriction and I'm not religious. In fact 60% of Canadian agree with me.

You mean that the majority would support restrictions?

What restriction do you want? Is this restriction something that can be decided by a doctor using his expertise and the wishes of the lady involved?

No the don't. I guess I misspoke... There are no restrictions... which is exactly like "has no restrictions".

Now. With that said, there are other factors. From what I read, in Canada it would be near impossible to find an abortion doctor to perform an abortion after 24 weeks (excluding medical reasons). But I'm not sure why that is. Obviously, they exist in the States, I don't think there is as much of a "abortion industry" in Canada... perhaps that is why you don't see people like that crop up.

Probably a lot of what some US states are trying to enact now.

If the lady involved gets a scan and realizes she is carrying a female... and she wants to destroy the fetus because she does not want a female.... say at 24 weeks. I don't think she should have that right..... just an example.

The issue of aborting fetuses because of they are female has recently become an issue in Canada. The "solution" so far is to request the providers of fetal ultrasounds not provide the sex of the fetus to the parents.

A law maybe required. :(

We recently went through that at our hospital. You simply go to a private ultrasound.

I doubt it happens all that often. But considering how often it does happen in parts of the world.... I sure it happens on occasion.

You are right that there are no "legal" restrictions to abortion in Canada but there are restrictions. For instance, some provinces don't fund abortion, some only partially fund and abortions are not readily available in remote areas or the North.

It is the policy of the Canadian Medical Association that doctors not perform late term (20 weeks) abortions.

They did this to make it unnecessary for Parliament to have to write a new law that would most likely have negative effects on the health of all women seeking abortions in Canada. Late term abortions are only done if the mother's health is in danger and even then the patient is often sent to the U.S. at Canadian taxpayers' expense.

I don't think there is as much of a "abortion industry" in Canada.

It's hard to make an industry out of a service that is funded by the medical system and has clear cut limits on what you can charge.

In British Columbia some health district have a policy that ultrasound technicians cannot give out any information to the parents regarding the ultrasound. It is given to a radiologist who then give it to the doctor or midwife.

It is the Canadian Medical Association's position to not give the sex of a child until the 30th week when an abortion is unavailable to parents.

Parents who want to know the sex are encourage to go to a private clinic which might have a different policy.

Reading the title of this thread, I get the macabre feeling that Canadians are for the abortion of babies instead of being in support of the choice of the mother to do so. Damn that stupid English language thing. :D
