Political Quiz

shanek has posted this quiz before, and everybody tackled him saying it was partial to Libertarianism. It seems okay to me, though.

Just take everything off after the dot-com.

This is the quiz Shane said Jesse Ventrua scored 100/100 on.

I score 80/50 (same as when I took it about a year ago IIRC), which makes me a Liberal/Centrist/Libertarian.

Change the semantics of a couple questions, and it would shift either way.

Anyone know of an equally simple, but more complete quiz of this nature?

It's not as bad as some of the ones I've seen.

I swear, there was one pro-liberal quiz that was downright blatantly transparent about its motives with questions such as:

In matters of trade, do you feel

a.) everyone deserves to be treated fairly

b.) large, multinational corporations have our best interests in mind.

Heh.

It's been beaten to death on other threads. The test itself is not bad, but it's imperfect, like any other measure of political philosophy.

I don't remember my exact last score, but I felt the result was inaccurate. I think it was inaccurate because I gave careful consideration to the implications of each question, which put me at the more authoritarian side of the chart.

What hasn't been discussed, really, is where the major political parties land on the diamond graph. I'd be curious to see the Democratic and Republican platforms filtered through these questions, or maybe the Presidential candidates.

Anybody up for it?

John Kerry

OK - here's my attempt at John Kerry:

Your Personal Self-Government Score is 20%.
Your Economic Self-Government Score is 20%.

My answers for Kerry:

Military service should be voluntary. (No draft) -> No
Government should not control radio, TV, the press or the Internet. -> No
Repeal regulations on sex for consenting adults. -> Yes
Drug laws do more harm than good. Repeal them. -> No
People should be free to come and go across borders; to live and work where they
choose. -> No

Businesses and farms should operate without govt. subsidies. -> No
People are better off with free trade than with tariffs. -> Maybe
Minimum wage laws cause unemployment. Repeal them. -> No
End taxes. Pay for services with user fees. -> No
All foreign aid should be privately funded. -> No

It's possible that, if he were answering this quiz himself, there'd be a few more "maybe"s in it. That might put him more center or center-left. I'm especially cognizant of the wording of these questions. For instance, "business and farms should operate without govt. subsidies" Well, Kerry's a big supporter of farm subsidies, but he might dream of a world without the "necessary evil" of farm subsidies. I don't know. All I know is that he's promoting them, so "No" it was.

My justification for these answers:

The highest form of service is military service. America's military is
having trouble recruiting and is increasingly relying on the reserves
for active duty. John Kerry believes we must change that. The
complicated missions we face and technologies we use depend on it. In a
Kerry Administration, no university that receives federal aid will be
allowed to ban the ROTC from their campus, except for religious
reasons. And the ROTC scholarship program will be adequately funded so
that students can attend the college of their choice. John Kerry will
also make modernizing our GI benefits a top priority, because no
program has been more successful increasing educational opportunities
for veterans while also providing an incentive for the best and
brightest to make a career out of military

With a 100% rating from the Human Rights Campaign since 1995, John
Kerry is a powerful voice in the ongoing fight for civil rights for gay
and lesbian Americans.

In order to deal with the problem of illegal drugs in this country,
efforts must be focused on keeping drugs out of the country and our
communities, as well as reducing demand for illegal drugs. John Kerry
supports aggressively targeting traffickers and dealers, as well as
making a commitment to sufficiently fund drug prevention and treatment
programs.

http://www.johnkerry.com/issues/immigration/

John Kerry believes that America needs immigration policies that are
fair and safe. The United States is a diverse nation built by people
from all parts of the world who are here because they believe in
freedom, democracy, and justice. Immigration is central to our nation's
history, as almost all of us are immigrants or the descendants of
immigrants. At the same time, John Kerry believes the federal
government must secure our borders so that terrorists do not use our
immigration system as a means to enter the country and do us harm.

John Kerry has worked to make sure that farmers have the support they
need and that rural communities have the tools they need to be safe and
prosperous. He has worked to give family farms a fair shot to compete
against large corporations and to stop vertical integration. He
opposed the 1996 "Freedom to Farm" Act, which nearly devastated family
farms, and worked to pass a new and improved farm bill. Kerry supports
legislation that prohibits packer ownership of livestock and ends
special deals for corporate hog farms. He supports truth in labeling
and country of origin labeling, which gives consumers the information
they need to support American farmers.

John Kerry supported improvements in the 2002 Farm Bill, such as the
increased conservation funding, rural community development and
stronger nutrition provisions. Kerry supports higher funding for
agriculture conservation programs and the value-added development grant
program, which can help rural communities grow their economies and
protect their environment. And he has supported programs that create
markets for farmers like the Farmers' Market Nutrition Programs for
Seniors and WIC.

Some Democrats pretend that we can close our doors to the global
economy. John Kerry believes we need strong leadership to assure that
the global economy works for America.

http://www.johnkerry.com/issues/economy/

He supports increasing the minimum wage and indexing it to inflation.

http://www.johnkerry.com/issues/foreignpolicy/

As the author of the most comprehensive HIV/AIDS bill ever to pass the
Senate and a proven fighter to expand funding for US bilateral and
global AIDS programs, John Kerry understands that the HIV/AIDS epidemic
has implications for the life and death of millions of men, women and
children across the globe as well as for global security

I don't always answer the same way, but I usually pretty consistantly get the upper half of Left-Liberal. Which I figure is true. But this test is too short. I like Political Compass more. It's also based on the Nolan Chart, but I think it's better. (Although I don't like his "left is purely an economic term" argument, not that it matters.)
