Playstation 2 Repair

So I've got one of the older, bulky versions of the Playstation 2. I've had to take it apart several times in order to fix a pretty common problem with the gear that moves the laser up and down along the disc.

Unfortunately, the last time I did this, I accidentally unhooked the ribbon cable that attaches the memory card/controller console to the rest of the system. Now, I can't get it to reattach. I am not sure what was holding it in there before, but it simply won't stay put now. I've found that if I hold the cable in place, I can sometimes get the console to recognize the controller, but it's very sensitive.

I've tried Google and posted my problem on a couple of playstation forums with no luck. Does anybody know a good forum for questions like this? Or better yet, do you know a good fix for this problem?

With the Playstation 3 launch only three months away, I'm not going to be spending money on a new PS2.

I had a similar problem that I couldn't fix. My solution: Trade in for newer PS2 model. My rationale about upcoming PS3: Never get them hot off the shelf as the $ comes down within 6 months anyway (hopefully). Sorry I can't be of more help...

I traded my old PS2 in at "Game Stop" and they accepted the trade as long as the CD door opened and closed. It didn't have to be in working order.

I wouldn't take that bit of advice for granted. We always used to check consoles for functionality at Game in the UK, it was procedure. I'd be more inclined to believe canadarocks got lucky enough to be served by staff who didn't really care that much (or idiots).

Still you could always grab yourself a pre-owned PS2 (after checking it works ;)) over here I can pick them up for £30 from the classifieds

When I worked at Game/ EB we never botherd to check if a console worked or not when they where traded in.

Hehe. I had a similar problem with my PS2, and in the end, I had to take it apart almost daily to fix that gear thing. I didn't want to buy a new PS2 for the same reason.

Then I saw the launch price of the PS3...

And then I decided to buy a new PS2 for about 130 US bucks, and then instead buy a Revolution when that comes out, which will give me continued access to my already existing game library, as well as being able to experience an actual new thing when it comes to controllers, as well as having a huge library of classic games from both Nintendo and Sega's Genesis (I think it was) to attain legally again. And it's about time that we get more than just some buttons and two analog sticks, eh?

And the best part of this plan is, I'll still have money left to buy a few games before I've then spent as much money as on a PS3, even if I buy the Revolution at launch price. :D

And I guess that in a couple of years or so, when the game producers are taking proper advantage of the PS3, and I've got myself an HD-TV (which prices also need to drop before I'm getting interested), then I'll finally buy that PS3. I guess. I'm not too keen on Sony's plans to make it more frequently upgraded, like a PC.

Anyway, that's my plan and opinion on how to best maximise my gaming experience, but the rest of you may feel free to think that this is a silly plan, of course.

Walk the Line: I am considering perhaps buying that instead of a PS3, yes. But the Revolution will still be bought first, because I don't need a TV upgrade for that. I'll be watching how the market evolves in the next year or so, and then make my decision.

As long as I have something to play Guitar Hero on, I'm happy.

Well if you worked for EB then that was 3 or 4 years before I worked there so procedures may have changed. Also checking before they're traded in means
a) You won't have an irate customer when you do sell it, even second hand it should be fit for purpose.
b) We got to dissapoint a Chav who thinks he's being clever :D

I only worked there for a few weeks, as a Christmas temp in 2001, before joining the Civil Service. The bastages kept screwing up our pay (in fact I never actually got paid until after I had left- and even then it was wrong) morale was generally crap, and we all hated the managers. I'm not surprised that proper procedure wasn't always followed- but then again there was never any mention that we should be checking if the consoles worked. There wasn't even a facility for us to check if they worked or not. If I wanted to "disappoint a chav" I'd just claim that eh looked under 18 and refuse to sell him GTAIII which had just come out. ;)

Well, you don't really -need- a TV upgrade, admittedly. But if I were to buy either of those (z360 or PS3), I would like to have the equipment that makes it work the best. And sooner or later, I'll probably have to buy an HD-TV anyway, thanks to other stuff that's going on in Norway with regards to TV broadcasts.

Anyway, right now, it's the Revolution that actually seems like something new, not just a hardware upgrade. So that's currently the most exciting choice -for me personally-.

Yeah, the more I hear about the PS3, the more I think Sony may be in trouble. My plan is still to buy it on the launch date though. I decided not to buy the PS2 when it initially came out, and then regretted it later when I couldn't buy it because of the shortages.

I'm justifying the $600 because of the Blu-Ray player. I just hope it's not going to be a crappy Blu-Ray player in the same way that the PS2 was a crappy DVD player.

But, the list of launch titles so far fails to excite me:

Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War (KOEI)
Call of Duty 3 (Activision)
EA Sports Fight Night Round 3 (Electronic Arts)
Fatal Inertia (KOEI)
Full Auto 2: Battlelines (SEGA)
Madden NFL 07 (Electronic Arts)
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (Activision)
NBA Live 07 (Electronic Arts)
Resistance: Fall of Man (Sony CE)
Ridge Racer 7 (Namco Bandai)
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 (Electronic Arts)
Tony Hawk's Project 8 (Activision)
Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom (Sony Online)

I'll probably pick up Madden, but aside from that, I'm not sure.

The removal of the rumble feature in the controller ticks me off too. Maybe I should just get an XBOX 360.

Oh, you mean a Nintendo Wii. I was wondering what the Revolution was before I looked it up.

I'll be watching how the market evolves in the next year or so, and then make my decision.

Probably a good idea. I waited till close to the end of the Xbox life cycle before I bought one. It really helped out as far as getting it cheap.

Will the PS3 have a similar online playing format to that of Xbox live?

Upgrade to an Xbox 360.

No way. Microsoft piece of junk. Wii or PS3. There's a lot of reasons that supporting MS in the console market will hurt games in the long run. Well, supporting MS in ANY market is bad for that market in the long run. Unfortunately, there's no proof that MS has hurt the PC industry, since we've not seen a PC industry without them. But given MS's consistent lack of innovation and use of strongarm tactics rather than quality to dominate PCs, I personally think it's fairly obvious that PCs would be much further along in development had they not been shakled with Windows.

There's only one reason to get a 360: Geometry Wars.

There's some truly unpleasant stuff in that document.

Be very careful about which HD TV you buy for gaming... Some of them have a huge delay between the received and shown picture, if the picture is not at a resolution it supports directly. Being a few frames behind on a game (especially a fighting game or music game) is not acceptable.
