Plane Crash In DC

Duffy on the shortage of air traffic controllers: "We have too many controllers that retire after 25 years of service. And so we have to look and go, is this a national security issue? Is this a safety issue? And should these air traffic controllers be retiring after 25 years of service?"

So does he want to raise the mandatory retirement age of air traffic controllers or higher children for the job?

It's easily done - Trump issues an EO not allowing air-traffic controllers to retire. Problem solved.

ETA: Christ on a bicycle - I thought I was making a joke - he is saying they shouldn't be allowed to retire after 25 years!

Do you want to be in the plane bring directed by someone who really doesn't want to be there and had lost their mental edge.

Good reply on X
If the Secretary of Hottubsexportation doesn’t know that there is a mandatory retirement age [56] for air traffic controllers and WHY there is a mandatory retirement age for air traffic controllers, then maybe someone who doesn’t have a degree in Reality TV hookups should TELL him.

Sean Duffy has absolutely no background or experience in transportation much less aviation. He's Secretary of Transportation because he's loyal to trump and will do whatever trump tells him to do. What a nightmare.

And Trump is an incredibly ignorant man .

Duffy: "We also have another problem. We still have retiring controllers. So if we can keep those experienced controllers actually on the job for a longer period of time, that's the differential that's gonna help us get to a place where we're fully staffed."

Now that they don't have to follow DEI they will be able to hire all the controllers they want.

SEAN DUFFY: Well, what you need to know is the last administration didn't pay attention to some really risky signs in the DC airspace. They didn't care about safety. They cared about DEI.
...says the guy who fired a bunch of people.

Bills to allow this are in Congress. The science cited to support allowing ATC controllers to work until 61 is based on recent FAA studies, whereas the science supporting mandatory retirement at ag 56 is about 50 years old. I'm willing to follow the science. But the problem isn't going to be fixed by simply keeping people on longer. You need thousands more controllers, and it's a hard job to attract people to do.

As for the congestion in the DC airspace, that's mostly on Congress. Lawmakers want more flights into and out of DCA because that's where they work.

Perhaps if they were represented by a strong union it could help attract and retain people.....

Several sources reporting that the accuracy of the helicopter's altimeter is being questioned.

Flying along, confident that you are at 200 ft (because your altimeter says so) and not realizing that you are actually at between 280 and 330ft, putting you right in the flight path of approaching aircraft.
That is an error between 40% and 65%. 😳
