Photoshop question

Yeah, that's what I'd do. Arrange the picture files by date, view the files as thumbnails, and you can probably locate it before too long.

I'll try the image matching software first, but I'm pretty sure what you describe is probably what I'll end up doing. (Either that or one other possibility--I might know someone who remembers where this batch of photos came from, which would help me narrow it down a lot.)
 
Imageseek might work better if you first save the PSD file as a JPEG. Then tell it to search for all similar image files.

You may be able to narrow your manual search a little further.

As well as sorting by date, you may know the dimensions of the original pic (are they the same as the .psd)

A further sort by filesize can give clues too.
