This is a story from a day or two ago, I don't think it's been mentioned on here yet.

A lady left her bag on the train.
When her phone started to ring, a fellow passenger answered it and told the caller what had happened and that he would hand the bag in at his destination station.

Another passenger - apparently jokingly - suggested stealing the phone.

He then promptly did just that.

Good Samaritan passenger confronted him and filmed him, the thief didn't seem to mind and even held up the phone for a nice picture:

Good guy put the story and video on his blog and it's now on the website of every newspaper.
As yet though, there's no mention of him being caught but it's surely only a matter of time.

It made me remember, some 3-4 juvie knobs broke into a house (owners away) and trashed the interior. I MEAN DESTROYED IT. And videoed themselves with the camcorder they found and stole from the house. Then lost the cam or tape, which was delivered to the cops. Busts and hilarity ensued.

Can't recall details as it's just one of the handfull that happen over the years. But they do make my heart soar.

Mooks.

:D

The guy who took the picture (and video) is Mat Parker, a staple of the UK science entertainment circuit (9 lessons and carols for godless people, uncaged monkeys, festival of the spoken nerd etc). He does maths based stand up comedy.

Top bloke. He does Skeptics in the Pub, too, and Maths Jam. Matt (@standupmaths) was the first speaker at the Reading SITP.

For those asking about Phone Thief, the police are receiving info but I don't know if he's been ID'd yet. So keep distributing his image!

Given his picture is in most major national newspapers and the video is nearing 200k views, he doesn't stand a chance. http://bit.ly/yR8BvE

Some people just love having their photo taken. They forget they are committing a crime and are consenting to evidence of their crime. So many people have filmed their crimes and then put the video on Youtube.

I'm as fashion unconscious as you can get, but that is one ugly jacket...
