Peter Popoff is STILL at it?!

i hear plenty of stories were ppl get healed by the prayer of christians, like this nut called mariano yeo who also claims that the dalai lama causes natural diaster were ever he goes, and i am disappont that ppl coud just believe them with out a second thought:eek:

and even if what they said was true, how many times their prayes DONT work:confused:

Interesting article that I have to agree with. Desperation does change the balance for some people. Spending what little you have on a promise might not seem like a bad idea if you have no other way out. You'd be wasting your money in this case, but you'd have hope for a little while. That's what makes what Popoff is doing so evil.

Why is everyone charged up over Peter Popoff but not Jack van Impe? Is there something that materially distinguishes the two in their capacity to defraud?

Cause jack is just a liar, at least he even admitted he cant predict christs second comin. Did Peter even admit he was a liar? Besides he defrauds alot mor ppl

I wish he start doing that again. I'd love to get into the production side of that one.

"Sorry, Peter...we needs nmore tears for the vials. THey have to be authentic, you know...let's start on the other knee!"

*Sounds of electric drill in the background...*

"...He's not crying anymore, boss!"

"His kneecaps must be all tapped out. Guess it's time to move on to the next zone, a little higher up..."

Unfortunately for me, this drivel comes on not long after Mythbusters. And whenever his drivel comes on, it's so bad it causes me physical pain until I can change the channel.

There's a fire somewhere that Popoff is depriving of having someone dying in it.

So du ppl just "forget" what happened with these scandals?:boggled:

For some, it's about the weird theology. They actually like a repentant sinner.* (It's in part how George W. Bush got to be president, despite his past.)

For others, it's like the Randi Carlos hoax--there's no amount of evidence that will convince them that their cherished beliefs (even about a televangelist) are wrong.

*ETA: And this is nothing new. Mark Twain wrote a great account of a con artist fleecing a bunch of believers at a tent revival meeting with an incredible story of being a sinful pirate in Huckleberry Finn. Some types of believers just eat that stuff up!

Also, in Jonathan Edwards' (the colonial preacher, not the guy who is the world's biggest douche or the guy who'd rather lay around the shanty and put a good buzz on) sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God", he goes at some length describing the theological relationship between the sinner and God. God really hates us, and we are wicked and abhorrent. Being wicked and recognizing it is an integral part of salvation by faith alone in this theology.

Seems like you're letting Jack off easy for no good reason. If he's a liar how can you take his admission as sincere?

And the numbers argument doesn't hold much water either. First, I'm skeptical of the claim that Popoff has defrauded more people than Van Impe. Second, even if the numbers are as you say, that's not because of intention or for lack of trying on Van Impe's part.

I think the answer at least around here is just this:

I think otherwise, most of us agree that there is no significant distinction among all of these scoundrels.

Check out BET after hours. There are several of these guys claiming that you will find thousands to millions of dollars somehow appearing in your bank account, as well as blaming debt on demonic possession of all things.

Well since it looks like he stopped trying to predict the second coming of christ, and what i meant was that it seems like popoff did a lot more damage than van impe, since from what ive seen all jack does is make up crackpot theroires about amageddon:D

Google Jack Van Impe sometime. He does a great deal more than make up crackpot theories about Armageddon.

Research is your friend. :)

Are you sure that's all he does? You mean his ministry doesn't take in huge sums of money while enjoying tax exempt status?

And that's without even considering the content of his preaching (policies toward Israel, gay marriage, misinformation about science, etc.)

I think an argument could be made that people like Van Impe are more harmful since they're more likely to fleece a larger segment of the population than over-the-top hucksters like Popoff. Frankly, I see no reason to consider any one of these scoundrels better than another.

dont these types of preachers basiclly all preach the samething, though some with a more violent attiude then others:confused:

Yes, I am shocked each Sunday when I see his name in the tv listings.

Then I proceed to kick myself for being shocked. There is so much stupidity and injustice in the world. Add to that a lot of "i want to believe", and I have no reason to be shocked.:)

Randi can't stop him because his followers don't want him stopped. These people believe whatever they want to believe and no amount of evidence or reason or common sense will stop this idiocy of theirs.

Didn't the 'Carlos' demonstration prove exactly that?
