So, it's midnight (or later) and that means cheezy infomercials.

One night I had the TV on and saw a commercial for Peter Popoff. He'll be on tonight too, I'm sure. That guy makes me sick to my stomach. I'm sure you all know what he does...

He talks now about people getting miracle money just popping up in their bank accounts, given by God! Oh, and he still throws people's walkers up on stage, and claims to cure their cancer.

There isn't a single insult I can think of that is bad enough to describe him.

I'm sure you've all seen the video of Randi debunking this guy, but perhaps you didn't see the video of Penn & Teller interviewing Randi about this worm. The things he says are far worse than just the Johnny Carson special.

Record what you can, if possible. Then send it to Randi. Then post on Youtube, plus show it here!

I believe the interview with Randi and P&T is on one of the BS! DVDs. Randi gets very emotional recounting the Popoff incident. It must be infuriating to catch someone so red-handed only to see him doing the same thing so many years later.

I'm hard-pressed to think of someone more selfish and vile than Peter Popoff.

Well, when his wife is talking to him pointing out stuff over his earpiece, she labels them "The ni**er in the front row to the left" and stuff like that. Randi didn't put that stuff in the Johnny Carson Expose I think because he figured this would stop him once and for all.

Now he's back on TV selling "Miracle Manna Bread" and claiming that people will receive money from nowhere magically showing up in their bank accounts. What if that money was an accidental IRS deposit that wasn't supposed to be there? The lucky person would think it was from God and then would get into some serious trouble with the government!

I think he is selling some kind of miracle prayer water or something. I saw about 5 mins of it one night. Can't believe he can still get away with this.

Interesting, I came across one of his "infomercials" this morning as I was making my kids' lunches and he was hawking "Miracle Manna", which is the same cheesy concept as the holy water stuff.

I can't believe he's still around.

Robert, I'll try to feed you info as much as possible.

It's a plastic tube of "holy water from the river Jordan" or some such nonsense. Tap water is more likely.

From here:
As of January 2008, Peter Popoff has dropped the "Miracle Spring Water" and now is promoting his new "Miracle Mana Bread". He asks viewers to ring in for a free "Miracle Mana Bread", which is reported to heal people and bring financial miracles just as the "Miracle Spring Water". As with the "Miracle Spring Water" when you receive it in the post you get the bread in a very small package along with instructions which includes sending Peter Popoff a "Seed Gift" of around £25.00.

And here:

"20/20" obtained a similar letter, which claims the miracle water comes from a Russian spring that, after the Chernobyl nuclear accident, had actually protected those who drank from it.

I bought some of that holy wter from popoff and sprinkled it all over my naked, pure body and felt the spirit of the lord!

Ha! Twice in 30 years (that I'm aware of) the bank has made errors in my account that resulted in thousands of dollars being deposited there for no known reason. After a week or two it disappears, after I inquired about it. I have heard that people who have withdrawn such windfalls are arrested for theft when the bank realizes its mistake and finds the money is no longer there. Could cause some hard feelings against god, don't you think?

How about John of God?

They both prey on the same people: the crippled and cancer patients, among others. They both give them false hopes with bogus miracle cures, makes their ailments worse, rob them of their time and money and delay any real help. The difference is that John, on top of all that, leads the terminally ill and others on a wild goose chase halfway around the globe, which is beyond criminal. It's beyond words, as a matter of fact.

Sorry to keep banging on about him but I really think that, if not Robert, someone should devote a website to exposing this man. He's much more widely known than you'd think, through word of mouth, the media coverage of him, his own constant self-promotion, DVDS, advertising, various materials and his website.

And think of all the good it could do! I like to think that Robert is metaphorically saving lives with SSB.com but if someone took on JoG, they'd be quite literally saving lives.

But maybe you'll do that with Popoff and Hinn...

Coming in the latter half of 2008: www.StopPeterPopoff.com

Thanks, RSLancastr! Few people boil my blood more than Peter Popoff! Do you accept donations to help your new site? I'd gladly donate! (I wish I had some sort of info. that would help, but I don't) I'll keep my eyes open for anything I could send your way that might help shut that guy down!

Randi has not neglected Popoff.

In fact, Randi has mentioned him in several issues of 'Swift' most recently and most prominently in the November 7, 2007 issue in the article entitled POPOFF DOES RATHER WELL.

For a man who was thoroughly exposed as a scam artist on TV on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, as well as in several other media confrontations and investigations, Peter Popoff continues to do rather well. Here’s an extract from an item carried on KOMO-TV Seattle, Washington, about the infamous TV evangelist:

...

Yes, and he’s making even more money than before, simply because no government agency will close him down – or cares to do so…

You are a god among men. Looking forward to this new "Stop..." site!
Thanks, NurseFF.

Robert, I'll try to feed you info as much as possible.
That will be great, SkepticGuy!

Thanks, klk. The site is still months down the road (latter half of 2008), but as I start putting it together, I'll be asking for help with articles and such. At this point, I don't know whether I'll be accepting donations or not, but thanks for the offer.

Am I the only one who thinks he looks and sounds like some kind of spawn of Satan? I get shivers every time I hear his voice, like someone just walked over my grave.

I wonder how he thinks during his "services"?

"You have crippling arthiritis! God's gonna touch you, yeah he's gonna touch you..." (thinks: no one else would) "You can feel his heat inside you! He's annointing you with his... FLOWING energy! Feel the POWAH!" (god get me out of here!)

Yeah one of his infomercials is on now... Miracle manna loaf...

The worst part that really grinds my gears is how he has this kind of deceitful sell-line in his RECORDED infomercials...

"I'm sensing... I'm picking up someone out there... A John, or a Frank... You have crippling back pain... You have three beautiful young children and it hurts you more that you can't play with them... John, or Frank, let God come inside you... Feel his power with my miracle water... "

If that isn't exploitation of people in their most vulnerable moments, nothing is. This kind of marketing based on false claims is immoral, it should be illegal.

I was watching Popoff's infomercial one night with some friends. I realized who he was from watching Randi expose him on the Tonight Show. No one else present knew who he was. A couple of people made the "Well anything is possible ..." type comment in regards to him being able to heal people or help them "receive the miracle of wealth". I told them it was a scam and all he wants is for people to send him money...that's all he cares about. I called the number and gave my friend's info and said I wanted gobs of money so I wanted to be blessed by Peter Popoff. Every week my friend would receive flyers, enevlopes to send donations, and very small plastic pouches filled with water. After a couple months, the mailings became less and less frequent, but every now and again he calls me and tells me Peter Popoff sent him a letter and is praying for my friend to send a monetary gift so God will know he is serious about wanting wealth.

I also made everyone who was present that night watch the video clip from the Tonight Show where Randi exposed Peter for what he was....and still is. That helped to open some eyes and reminded them to think in a more skeptical fashion.

Unfortunately, I know a woman who spent several thousand dollars to go visit John of God in Brazil. Thankfully she is not dying of any terminal disease. But she told stories of many people who were there that were suffering from some terminal illness......all of them paying to be "healed" by John of God. She wants to believe....no amount of logic or evidence convinces her that the man is a fraud.
