Personal assaults on Obama

I remember when Clinton was first elected president. At the time, I was monitoring our local fundamentalist radio station, KKLA. The vitriol they launched against Clinton really appalled me. Their attitude was "How dare this liberal get elected president?" There was no sense of accepting that more people voted for the other guy than voted for your candidate, and their hatred of Clinton was rabid.

However, that's nothing compared to the crap leveled at Obama, latest of which is revealed in a new thread on this twit from the rock group Megadeath accusing Obama of staging the shootings at the Sikh temple and in Texas. Obama has been accused of being a secret Muslim and of not being born in the territorial U.S. and hence no having the right to be president, among other things. It's one thing to oppose his policies and want him out of office. It's quite another to accuse him of being a crypto-Muslim.

So, I'm wondering what the cause of all this is. Is it just the steadily devolving nature of the religious right producing ever more shrill and irrational statements, or is it sub rosa racism? Does anyone have any ideas?

I saw that last night, it's certainly out there.

I'm keeping my eye on this however. It brings to mind, as mentioned in that article, the Swiftboat attacks on Kerry. One of Kerry's strength was in his military service and Obama's includes killing OBL. Kerry strength was negated with the Swiftboat lies and I suspect they hope they can do the same with Obama.


I expect this to get legs over the next few weeks.
 
Who cares? They drove Rachel Jackson to the grave and called Lincoln a syphilitic ape. Has it really gotten worse? One could argue it's getting better.

Did you read the link? It's about the "leaks" and how he has compromised the Seals, and other crap. All ******** of course, but then so was the ******** about Kerry

I couldn't get the videos to play, but I'm wondering: Was Obama supposed to keep bin Ladin's death a secret?

It could be Megadildo for all I care (though I do take note of the correction, thanks). More to the point, howeve rthere's not much to do but refute the nonsense and let these people look stupid. What I'm wondering about is the intensity and irrational outrageousness of the personal attacks.

ETA: According to the Washington Post almost 20% of Americans think Obama is a Muslim. Thus, we can't simply laugh off this high level of irrational belief.

Crazy people say crazy ****. The current level of intensity and outrageousness is just par for the course, sadly. Hell, we still have bozos on this forum who insist on calling Clinton and Reagan all kinds of immature names and one of them's dead and the other might as well be.

It's not the main reason I don't care about politics as anything but entertainment, but it's in the top three.

Let it slide or you'll get an ulcer. :D

I'm struggling to understand why - apart from an attempt to make the issue partisan - you skipped over GWB in your post. He was called stupid on a daily basis, and there were and are quite a large number of people who believe that he ordered the destruction of the WTC.

As has been stated, these sorts of baseless attacks are nothing new and have been leveled at every US President.

Yes, such nonsense is just repeated more often and seen more often with the internet. Obama's status as a secret muslim communist is comparably tame compared to the last two presidents. Bush was worse than Hitler, behind 9/11 and possibly a chimpanzee. Clinton was a murderer who sexually abused more fat girls than a horny ice cream cone.

Similar accusations were leveled at prior presidents and other politicians here and elsewhere, they were just limited in spread to the technologies at the time.

But how does it compare to what the 9/11 CTists say about Bush?

ETA: Also, it doesn't seem to me that "assaults" is the correct word for what you're talking about. Pretty much all presidents are the targets of credible threats of actual harm, but even most Birthers don't advocate anything like that.
