Pearl Harbor Conspiracy

Worked out great for the IJN at Midway, Phillipine Sea, and Leyte Gulf.
Yeah, The One Great All-out Battle was to be fought close to the Home Islands, with the enemy conveniently sailing into a trap which allowed the IJN to concentrate and ships to dash in and resupply/rearm before going back out to utterly destroy the enemy.

Didn't quite work that way.

Which weren't the 'Decisive Battle ' the Japanese were trying to force.
The Japanese didn't realise that the US navy was playing a different game.

None of those were the decisive battle Yamamoto sought.

Damn Allies kept not doing what they were supposed to do.
How do you figure? It's obvious the Japanese expected and prepared for a confrontation in the Solomons. Getting constantly bombed from Rabaul, and shelled every night by the IJN at Guadalcanal sure seems like doing what they were supposed to do.

Personally, I think the decisive battle happened at Midway, and it played out exactly as Mahan intended. Both sides showed up with their main strength. Both sides went all out. One side won, the other side lost, and the loser was never quite able to build up such strength again. Midway vindicates Mahan, and vindicates Yamamoto, in my opinion. There was nothing wrong with his plan. It's just that war is a zero-sum game.

Drachinifel did a good in depth video on Japan's decisive battle doctrine and how it developed.
