Peak Oil: What are the Facts?

This can only be true of there will be a breakthrough on the fusion front and that is very remote if that ever happened. 40 years ago I learned during physics classes on the Atheneum that fusion was 50 years away. It still is. At best. Meanwhile peak uranium is in 2015. There will be no global uranium based nuclear future. By the time the new power stations will go online uranium supply will be in terminal decline.

Once again, you sound like me in 2005.

Pay a visit to the nuclear threads on these boards.

Or have a look at breeder reactors, a proven technology that can be implemented if we throw a couple of billion dollars at it.

Thanks to Einstein, Oppenheimer, Teller and many others, we are saved!

Maybe he's checked your track record in predicting the past before deciding how much weight he should put on your predictions of the future?

Some people have a incredible talent for always picking the wrong people to get information from.

My point is that Heinberg has no special knowledge or expertise that makes him a valuable source on Peak Oil.

He lectures a soft science and I've caught him in some New Age woo as well as Truther nuttiness.

He does have some interesting ideas on how to deal with the collapse of industrialised civilization. But that is better described as survivalist fiction.
If you like that sort of stuff I recommend the Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks.

If industrial society actually collapsed I wouldn't even hear it, because the Citroen C6 has double glazing.

Heinberg also has a big streak of Ludditism in him. He seems to want to return to a pre industrial society. Of course he idealzies pre industiral society, ignoring the negatives, like a short life span.

You know as much about uranium and nuclear energy as you know about pretty much everything else.

Known uranium reserves are enough to provide all the worlds energy usage for roughly thirty-five thousand to fifty thousand years. Unconventional reserves are sufficient to provide our energy needs for 2 million+ years.

The amount of U-238 that the US has stockpiled is alone capable of fueling Americas economy for three thousand years.

And this is all doable with technology developed in the 1940s.

It is absurd to suppose that Heinberg wants to go back to a pre industrial society just for the heck of it. He says, and many with him, the fuel for industrial society is running out. He has no illussions whatsoever that a glorious future is just around the corner. He says 'The Party is Over' with the word 'party' as an indicator that it will be a loss.

But you seem to be from the school of thought that the 'American lifestyle in non-negotiable'. And you know what? There will be no negotiations indeed.

The plug will be pulled.

thank Enrico Fermi...he is considered the "Father of Nuclear Power." Enstein had little impact and Oppenheimer and Teller were weapons people.

The latest cost for nukes are in the $5000/kw US. So, a single plant is looking like 5 billion.

Current projections are for nuclear power to remain flat or grow slightly in the world. Old plants will be shutdown and the new ones comming up are going to take a bit to build. China has the most ambitious commitment.

For the record; I agree that a fuel efficient car is a more rational choice at this point in time.

But I'm not in the mood for a rational choice and willing to suffer the consequences (owning a worthless car).

If movies from my childhood taught me anything, it's that after the apocalypse, whatever the cause, you'll want the more powerful car because you'll be able to bolt more armor and weapons onto it.

Perfectly rational choice.

And for Fermi, we can thank Hitler and Mussolini. Fermi fled Europe to the United States just before the war to protect his wife who was jewish. Where Americans stuck him in a laboratory instead of a concentration camp.

Europe had some of the smartest scientists in the world before the fascists chased them over to our side. Thanks, Nazis! (dumbasses :p)

Well, this graph tells quite a bit. See if you can find an energy source that can replace 350 quads/year in the next 50 years or so. It has to be reasonably transportable and provide a good commercial return on investment.

I have put a poll up and a space for people to say what their general position is (another thread in the conspiracy theory section).

Just a way to keep the how's and why's in this section, and a handy way to check what side of the fence someone sits on.

Breakthrough promises $1.50 per gallon synthetic gasoline with no carbon emissions

New thread.

All you who have been driving a Prius the last few years, please identify yourselves so we can point and laugh.

Did you really emerse yourself in the energy field in 2005 like a former president in alcohol? You should have been able to distinguish between an energy source and a means of storage.

Can you explain why your estimates of our nuclear fuel reserves are off by thirty thousand years or more? Is it because the technology was largely developed by jews and "race traitors"?

Well, well, what an agressive tone!

Why don't you browse through this report to get confirmation of the idea that global uranium reserves are in the range of decades, not centuries, let alone millenia:

http://www.energywatchgroup.org/fileadmin/global/pdf/EWG_Report_Uranium_3-12-2006ms.pdf

It is a German report. You will probably have little trouble recognizing the Nazi in me because of it.

If you have any questions, just ask.
