I think PO is real, personally. I don't know much about it, but I'm reading Beyond Oil right now. Seems a pretty reasonable theory.

Decades ago some scientists foresaw the peaking of world oil supplies soon after the year 2000, even though they had less exhaustive data about global reserves to work with. Refer to:
