Merged Peace President invades Venezuela,/U.S. Forces Capture Maduro

The U.S. lays down the law.

From Ambassador Walz's statement today at the U.N. Security Council

This is the Western Hemisphere. This is where we live – and we’re not going to allow the Western Hemisphere to be used as a base of operation for our nation’s adversaries, and competitors, and rivals of the United States. You can’t turn Venezuela into the operating hub for Iran, for Hizballah, for gangs, for the Cuban intelligence agents and other malign actors that control that country. You cannot continue to have the largest energy reserves in the world under the control of adversaries of the United States, under the control of illegitimate leaders, and not benefiting the people of Venezuela, and stolen by a handful of oligarchs inside of Venezuela.

So do something about Russia in Ukraine.

It's perhaps worth reminding everyone that, unlike the division line between northern and southern hemispheres which can only sensibly go at the equator, the division line between eastern and western hemispheres is entirely arbitrary. The only reason for its position is that the country which happened to be the superpower at the time, and which therefore got to choose where it went, decided to put it through its capital city.

I'm a bit surprised Trump hasn't complained about where the Prime meridian is, as its position only really gives him the Americas to lay claim to as part of 'his' hemisphere. There are a lot more countries in the eastern hemisphere to steal resources from bring democracy to, which is obviously unfair.

I just did a bit more research on this, and the choice wasn't as UK-determined as I'd assumed.

Because of a growing international economy, there was a demand for a set international prime meridian to make it easier for worldwide traveling which would, in turn, enhance international trading across countries. As a result, a Conference was held in 1884, in Washington, D.C. Twenty-six countries were present at the International Meridian Conference to vote on an international prime meridian. Ultimately the outcome was as follows: there would be only one prime meridian, the prime meridian was to cross and pass at Greenwich (which was the 0°), there would be two longitude directions up to 180° (east being plus and west being minus), there will be a universal day, and the day begins at the mean midnight of the initial meridian.

There were two main reasons for this. The first was that the USA had already chosen Greenwich as the basis for its own national time zone system. The second was that in the late 19th century, 72% of the world's commerce depended on sea-charts which used Greenwich as the Prime Meridian. The recommendation was based on the argument that naming Greenwich as Longitude 0º would be of advantage to the largest number of people.

Tell Glenn that China only gets around 5% of its oil from Venezuela.

Trump’s capture of Maduro IS “America first.” Not because we get oil, but because we STARVE China of it. Without Venezuela’s oil (and hopefully soon, Iran’s), it’s game over for China:

No Taiwan invasion.
No AI dominance.
No BRICS reserve currency.

I'm sure he remembers how successful America's policy of not supplying imperial Japan with oil was 85 years ago, in preventing them from attacking anyone. That worked great. Oh, wait...

Give him a week and he'll be explaining the opposite - why it's actually "America First" for US oil companies to make a fortune by selling Venezuelan oil to China just as fast as they can extract it.

Trump Ambassador Waltz just told the United Nations THIS IS OUR HEMISPHERE, Russia, China and Iran ARE DONE playing games here.

That's a good plan. Start a confrontation with Russia and China. :eye-poppi

Does he take any notice of what allies are saying?

KERNEN: Is it our right to force our will on a country in our best interest or in the hemisphere's best interests?

REP. RICK CRAWFORD: I think it's in the Western Hemisphere's best interest that we show leadership in our neighborhood, so I think that's being welcomed by our allies

Leavitt: This is one of the greatest foreign policy achievements ever… As Joe Biden used to falsely say, we can now truly say, America is back thanks to the courage of Trump.
I was unaware that Biden used to say America is back thanks to the courage of Trump.

But I can agree with Leavitt that, if Biden had actually said that, Biden would have been lying.

I doubt whether there is such a person as "Ambassador Walz" who made any such statement at the UN Security Council.

But there really is an Ambassador Waltz, and he really did say this:
