Passing out religious tracts.

Down in south Florida there was a local church that had tracts that looked like folded $20 bills on the outside. They "accidentally" drop them all around parking lots.

When you unfolded them you got any number of explianations on why you need to repent and be saved.

Oh yeah, I've seen those, as $20s, and also as $5s, $10s, $50s and $100s. Not only downright annoying, but just plain LITTER.

I don't know why you think they are irritating? I love the different ways people write tracts to share the truth. I get my tracts from several places like Christian Books.com and such. I try to get them out consistently hoping the Lord can use them to help some receive him. Chick tracts are not ones I have ever passed out though.

Yes--it's a little irritating to be interrupted by people promoting their personal religious beliefs.

I don't see many born-again xtians in my neck of the woods---but I seem to live on a popular Jehovahs Witnesses route.

Now thatspring ishere--I can expect them knocking on my door about once a month until the weather gets cold again.

Although I'm not interested in their message-I do have a certain respect for people who have the courage of their convictions.

I usually just politely tell them I'm not religious and don't want to discuss anything.
Most of the time they politety accept & go on to the next house.

I don't believe in any religion....but some are more plausible than others.

I find your particular beliefs to be extremely hatefull & repulsive.

Rather than wasting your prayers on "unbelievers"....save your prayers for yourself.

If you're right and god is the cruel, vindictive, petty heartless bastard that he seems to be then you're deluding yourself that he's going to let your little group off the hook.

He'll pull some "gotchas" out of his hat & you'll be in the soup with the rest of us.

Speaking of cruel gods---are you going to answer my question?

What did you do that was so horrible that you felt it deserved eternal suffering & punishment?

As has been pointed out, Christians distribute a wide fairly wide variety of tracts. Over the last few years I've collected the tracts that have been offered to me. I do this for two reasons. First, I figure the tracts are "safer" with a mean old atheist like me rather that falling into the hands of some potentially vulnerable person. And, second, I'm curious to see what arguments are presented in the tracts themselves. Overall, the arguments are incrediably weak, generally coming down to "turn or burn" with a heavy reliance on the Bible as inspired evidence. I've never seen a tract that failed to assume divine inspiration for the Bible, which is of course a non-starter when it comes to convincing atheists.

I did get one fairly interesting tract a few summers ago on a trip to Key West, Florida. In Key West they have a "sunset celebration" in Mallory Square every day of the year. The square has performers of all sorts for the show -- musicians, jugglers, tight-rope walkers, -- and at least one street preacher. The tract he was passing out was entitled "Key Facts" and was pretty much a standard gospel tract but slanted to include references to the Florida Keys.

As a Mormon missionary the primary means to gain converts is through "tracting". In Mormon parlance that means going door to door. We didn't always hand out literature AKA tracts but we often did.

I'm surprised they don't go door-to-door in my area. The Mormons in my neighborhood congregate by the main shopping strip. They've never approached me (aside to say "good morning" or another greeting as I walk by) and I've observed they mainly focus on Hispanic women (actively walk up to them).

So I was right you were in with the LDS. They are not Christian at all, they are a cult. The Mormons do not have Jesus right so no wonder you left. It's the truth that saves us, not religion. Jesus Christ is the risen Messiah and the only way to the Father. Jesus is not Michael the angel or Lucifers brother. Are you hearing me? The book of Moromon is nothing but false teachings so everything you were taught you need to get rid of and start with just a good version of the Bible. I would make sure it's not a Bible published by the Mormon church. No wonder, now I understand why you are so upset, you should be as the Mormon church has lied to you about how to be saved.

I could send you some of my tracts if you would like along with a good version of the Bible? Let me know if you are interested. Take Care RF

Last time a Jehovah's witness came to my door was the same afternoon we had gotten all the stuff out to decorate for Hanukkah. I came to the door with the Menorah I was polishing in my hand. ;)

It is too bad that I despise the laughing dog smilie, as this is the perfect opportunity for it.

I'll just go with the generic calling for evidence response. It's just gonna be ignored and answered with preaching anyways. Insert that group X is actually evil because of Y teaching that is in your book and ignore any calls for proof of your statements. Her fundamentalism is sooooo yesterday.

Oh, without a doubt. I just found her post laughable considering RandFan's obvious atheism (if anyone had bothered to look at his posting history), and his arguments against the LDS church. KK just saw one of her keyword triggers and went into Godbot mode.

Ohhhh boy, then again preaching to someone because she thinks they aren't atheists is new behavior for her.

Funny, I think of all the groups of any religion as a cult. All patting each other on the back in how right they are about their so-called god and how the others aren't getting it right.

So how is your cult any different KK. Oh, I know, they have it right.

So which hateful, nasty, narrowminded, venomous, self righteous, blasphemous church are you in with KK?

Which fairytale would you recommend KK if not the Book of Mormon? King James hmm or how about the Koran, maybe Light on Yoga?

Im sure RandFan has better things to do than receive your tracts KK, they wouldnt be anymore than the ramblings of a cult.

Are you hearing me? No, I didnt think so.

I used to get Chick Tracts all the time in my Halloween basket, but I did grow up in small town North Carolina.......

I know what you mean, Kathy! My mother was Church of God and my father is United Pentecostal. I am thankful every day that I got out of those cults!

I have a very entertaining non-Chick tract slipped into my Bible by my father or step-mother about how the Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon. Right city, wrong tyrant.

Probably a silly question....but I'll ask anyway.

When christian fundamentalists refer to "passing out religious tracts", does this specifically refer to Chick Tracts or do they have a wider array of annoying literature?

In other words--are "Chick tracts" to born again christians what "The Watchtower" is to jehovah's witnesses?
The biggest problem with passing out religious tracts is they have to go through your digestive system so you can pass them out. And they taste terrible. Lots of fiber though.:jaw-dropp:eek:

When I lived in South Dakota, I used to get these mailed anonymously to me or left on my doorstep all the time because I was living in sin with a *gasp* woman. Might also be that I also put up flyers to start up a feminist/Goddess celebrant (yes I went through THAT phase ) group.

My dad was a United Methodist minister when I was little, and we always received Chick tracts at summer bible school, etc, and definitely every Halloween). Of course, we also received Gideon New Testaments right in my elementary school library during school hours (Appalachian VA).

I ordered a whole set of Chicks and randomly mail them to my brother (he's an atheist as well). Plus *BONUS* the apartment above him is used by the LDS to house missionaries, so he gets loads of fresh proselytizing every few months!

Slightly OT: How do you all feel about defacing Gideon bibles in hotel rooms? I tend to either (1) place a Gideon Exposed (evolvefishdotcom) sticker inside or (2) chuck it in the hallway. My brother likes to cut out tranny sex ads from local rags and gluestick them at crucial verses (a step up from him using the bible pages as TP and chucking them in the trash). We both piss off my semi-catholic boyfriend, understandably.
