The only way for them to counter this is to say that animal species are not found in corroborating global layers, and that scientists are just cherry picking the incidents where they do. Or else, all species share organized degrees of buoyancy that you can organize them by.

Well, they do have one ultimate fallback: Goddidit.

I had a good friend who honestly believed that fossils were too "convenient," and that faith in God and creation in the face of actual evidence, was correct because it was very difficult. It was hard to maintain faith because of evidence that faith was wrong, thus faith is right.

God, I assume, can leave whatever fossils he damn well wants.

Of course, for the ID people to say this, they'd have to completely abandon any pretense of any scientific anything and just give up on the evidence. That is not their current strategy.
