It's called a useful idiot, and Palin has been one for the Repubs for several years now.

As for her speech - big deal, she's making a joke in front of the NRA. People need to lighten up.

The problem is that too many don't see it as a joke but as good policy.
 
Correct. She is not a comedian, she is a spokesperson for the GOP. Her "joke" endorses torture and racism at the same time.

C'mon! Enemies who would utterly annihilate America, they would obviously have information on plots. They carry out jihad. Oh, but you can’t offend them. Can’t make them feel uncomfortable, not even a smidgen. Well, if I were in charge, they would know that waterboarding is how we baptize terrorists.

I think I've spotted the bit that was the actual joke; and folks who would take that part seriously enough to want it really do need to lighten up.
