Wow

It's one thing for the likes of Orly Taitz to think that this is a legitimate issue, but now Sarah Palin?

Of course, like Lou Dobbs, she's only half-way endorsing the idea, but still.

Charles Johnson says it better though:
The circle of stupid is now unbroken, as Sarah Palin announces on right wing talker Rusty Humphries’s show that she thinks it’s “fair” to question Barack Obama’s citizenship: Palin: Obama birth certificate ‘a fair question’.

Yes, that’s right. Sarah Palin is blowing the Birther dog whistle. You’ll never see a better demonstration of political cynicism mixed with blinding stupidity.

Well, I would actually agree. Questions about Obama's birth certificate ARE fair. But once the question is answered* then those people need to accept the answer and move on.

*such as "here is the certificate of live birth...it may not have the word 'certificate' in it, but there is ****all difference."

Sarah Palin: Stupid Conspiracies
Stupid Conspiracies
Voters have every right to ask candidates for information if they so choose. I’ve pointed out that it was seemingly fair game during the 2008 election for many on the left to badger my doctor and lawyer for proof that Trig is in fact my child. Conspiracy-minded reporters and voters had a right to ask... which they have repeatedly. But at no point – not during the campaign, and not during recent interviews – have I asked the president to produce his birth certificate or suggested that he was not born in the United States.
So it's a tu quoque?
I seem to recall that at the time she suggested that those were not, in fact, fair questions about Trig.

Wow. When Little Green Footballs thinks you're crazy, you've known have gone of the deep end.

Let's remember that Little Green Footballs is not a right-wing blog these days. Still, Hot Air's still comfortably on the starboard:

At 7:45, your quote of the day. Something for (almost) everyone here: For the left, smoking-gun proof that she’s a fringe character, and for Birthers, smoking-gun proof that their concerns are mainstream. As for righties like me and Ed (and Glenn Beck) who think this particular science is well settled, tomorrow should be a fun media day.

I wonder if she realized when she said this that it’s going to follow her around.

She'll have to backtrack quite hard tomorrow or she's toast.

It was a fair question when it was first presented. But now everybody's gone overboard and not refusing to acknowledge that the question has been answered is just foolish. It's akin to a teacher saying that two plus two equals four and then a student refuses to believe it just because of mistrust of authority or because his politics tells him to disregard it.

Ahem. Context, from the same link as above:

Palin suggested that the questions were fair play because of "the weird conspiracy theory freaky thing that people talk about that Trig isn't my real son -- 'You need to produce his birth certificate, you need to prove that he's your kid,' which we have done." "Maybe we can reverse that," she said, returning to Obama's birth certificate, describing the type of thinking involved with a word that isn't clear in the audio.

She's right: if it's a fair question to attack her by claiming Trig isn't really her son unless she produces a birth certificate, it's equally fair to attack Obama by claiming he's not eligible unless he produces a birth certificate. She is saying both are weird conspiracies, but if annoying one side with personal attacks like that is fair game, one should annoy both sides.

She should have taken the high road, though, and not retaliate in kind by "you're going to ask this, so I'll ask that" or "I'll show you mine if you show me yours" grade-school logic.

The problem with this sort of equivocation is, when she showed that Trig was her son (and it was shown that he could not have been her oldest daughter´s son because she was newly pregnant at the time of his birth), the claims ended. When it was proven that McCain was a natural born citizen, people no longer claimed otherwise. When it was shown that Bush had indeed served his full time in the Air National guard, people no longer claimed otherwise.

However, no matter how clearly Obama has proven that he is a natural-born citizen, the claims won´t stop.

This isn´t grade-school logic. This is something more sinister.

Charles Johnson has officially bailed on right-wingyness.

eta: as Brainster said.

Yes...because this is the brilliant political argument that two wrongs make a right.

However, she doesn't know the high road...only the strange lie road...so she could never take it.

Some strange poll I heard of recently suggested that 82% of people who think Obama is the anti-Christ have a favorable impression of Palin. Yep...that's the group you want a future national leader to have in his or her back pocket.

Hopefully this is the final nail in the coffin for Palin on the JREF boards...

Not sure where you got that idea.

The site 2 years ago was ******* crazy, accusing American Muslims of colluding with al-qaeda. Basically he believed in paranoid anti-Muslim conspiracy theories.

It's a very pro-skeptical, pro-science blog.

It's a very pro-skeptical, pro-science blog now

And that's exactly it. Asking questions about Obama's citizenship only becomes insane and loony once they've been answered and Hawaii has certified the birth certificate. Asking questions about whether or not Trig really is Sarah Palin's son was always bat-:rule10-:rule10'ing-crazy.

Not as crazy as it seems on face level. She made her amazing family skills a key point in her campaign and when combined with some of the stupidly dangerous actions she apparently took near the birth of Trig, it isn't as unreasonable as it sounds. I wouldn't go as far as to 'demand' the birth records, but it was a fair question at the time.
