Palestinian woman's death prompts soul-searching

When a young woman was admitted to Al Hussein hospital with a fractured spine and bruises on her body and face, doctors began to treat yet another case of traumatic injury.



Everyone here was used to young patients arriving with devastating wounds.
The hospital is located close to the Palestinian city of Bethlehem, whose streets lead past packed suburban refugee camps to Israeli army checkpoints and the foreboding separation barrier - all frequent flashpoints for violence.
But Israa Ghrayeb's story was different.


It would unravel into tragedy, protest and much soul searching over the protection of women from gender-based violence in Palestinian society.

This should cause some cognitive dissonance among my acquaintances who've taken the Palestinian/Israeli situation to a pure binary.

Who exactly is searching their soul over this?

Usually, "soul-searching" connotes a profound experience of self-doubt. You're searching your own soul to answer some pressing question about what you believe in, or the righteousness of your actions, or the wisdom of your choices.

So who's searching their soul over this? In context, it'd probably be Palestinians collectively, as a society where this kind of thing is commonplace/tolerated/whatever. But somehow I doubt that's actually happening.

From the article, this "soul searching" seems to be more wishful thinking on MSN's part, than any kind of factual reporting about emerging cultural self-doubt in Palestinian society.

Could be, I have heard of some cases of SJWs realizing the hypocracy of that kind of position, but the vast majority still think that everything that happens in that part of the world is the fault of 'The Jew'...
